Job Description:

The Maritime College, State University of New York, invites applications for the position of Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor in the Department of Engineering. The department offers Bachelor of Engineering degrees in Electrical, Marine, and Mechanical Engineering, and Naval Architecture. All B.E. programs are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET. We welcome applications from candidates with an engineering background and USCG licensure.

Required Qualifications:

Successful candidates for appointment as Lecturer will have most, if not all, of the following qualifications:

• A bachelor's degree in any engineering discipline (5-6 years post-graduation at the time of application), and a willingness to progress academically by attending graduate school while working at SUNY Maritime
• Active (or previously held) licensure as a USCG Engineering Officer - Unlimited Horsepower or an equivalent foreign endorsement
• Experience as an engineering officer in charge of a manned engine room or designated duty engineer in a periodically unmanned engine room (750KW and above)
• Ability to teach and develop practical STCW courses in topics needed to prepare cadets for the 3rd Assistant Engineer Exam
• Ability to teach and assess cadets during the annual Summer Sea Term onboard the Training Ship Empire State VII (TSES VII) for additional compensation. Candidate is expected to participate in two out of three consecutive Summer Sea Terms for at least 1/2 of the cruise
• Experience with engine room simulators or shipboard experience with modern IAS or IMCS systems
• A commitment to engage in departmental, school, and college service activities, such as committee work, student recruitment, and outreach events
• A commitment to provide professional service to the engineering community by serving on technical committees and participating in professional organizations

Candidates may be considered for Senior Lecturer with most, if not all, of the following additional qualifications:

• 1st Assistant Engineer or Chief Engineer USCG License
• Dry dock experience as an engineering officer, and/ or participation in vessel delivery and sea trials
• Experience as an engineering officer on a diesel electric propulsion system and in modern sustainability engineering systems onboard
• Steam licensure
• Experience as a port engineer, cargo/ gas engineer, technical superintendent of a ship or a (dry/wet) fleet of ships
• Demonstrated experience in leading projects or groups in a relevant field

Exceptional candidates will be considered for tenure-track appointment as Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor where appropriate, based on established criteria in the Engineering Department.

Additional Information:

Classification/Salary Range: The Lecturer, Assistant, Associate or Professor position will be an academic year 10 month appointment. The Lecturer 10 Month position is a non-tenure track, while appointments as Assistant, Associate, or Professor are tenure-track." Initial appointment without tenure (non-continuing appointment) will be for a fixed term of two or three years. Tenure (continuing appointment) hire will be considered for those already tenured or with significant previous academic experience and a demonstrated track record of success. This is a seasonal, part-time summer position, 15-30 hours/week, June-August. Detailed schedule discussed upon hire; includes daytime weekend work. Hourly wage is $15-$20/hr and is commensurate on experience and qualifications. No employee benefits provided.

Buzzards Bay Coalition is a non-profit, membership organization dedicated to the protection, restoration, and sustainable use and enjoyment of Buzzards Bay and its watershed. The organization works to improve the health of the Bay ecosystem for all through education, conservation, research and advocacy.

Located on popular Onset Beach, the Coalition’s Onset Bay Center provides high-quality outdoor waterfront exploration programs for community members of all ages and abilities through activities focused on building a connection with Buzzards Bay. The Onset Bay Center works to provide access to the wonders of Onset Bay, reinforcing the link between Wareham residents and their
local maritime heritage and creating generations of future Buzzards Bay stewards. The Onset Bay Center will host both full- day and half-day youth programs, as well as evening adult & family programs, throughout the summer.
