Job Description:

The State University of New York Maritime College is currently looking to employ temporary personnel for different positions for the various departments during this year's summer training aboard T. S. EMPIRE STATE. The various available positions are Yeoman, Office Manager, Stewards and Regimental Duty Officers.

Due to the unique nature of the training ship, incumbents may be assigned in different capacities as the needs of the ship dictate and their background allow.

The Empire State is a public vessel of the United States, solely operated for the training and licensure of the cadet midshipmen. While onboard, the cadets are engaged in classroom lecture, maintenance and repair. Additionally, cadets are involved in watch keeping, drills, and training exercises all in preparation for their eventual licensure. There will be over 500 cadets onboard to account with approximately 20% in ROTC (Reserve Officers' Training Corps) and preparing for commissioning in the Armed Services following graduation and licensure.

The training days are geared to maximize the experience of the cadets and flexibility is a requirement regarding daily scheduling of duties.

The Full Cruise appointment is anticipated to begin April 30, 2026 and ends July 20, 2026. However, you may apply and be considered for one of the following.

Stewards

Ship housekeepers are responsible for cleaning and sanitizing spaces and items aboard the ship.

Description of Duties:

• Meticulous clean and sanitize the staff and cadets cabins, public areas, and crew quarters. Effectively cleaning and sanitizing the vessel, ship housekeepers can help ensure the passengers' safety
• Ensure high standards of hygiene and guest comfort through tasks like vacuuming, sanitizing, restocking amenities, handling linens,
• Mopping floors throughout the ship
• Replenish toiletries, stationery and ensuring amenities are always stocked
• Handling soiled linens, towels, and bedding, sending them to laundry, and returning fresh supplies
• Identify and report maintenance problems or broken equipment to management

Regimental Duty Officer

Description of Duties:

• Serves as a mentor and training officer for the cadets completing sea term activities
• Various administrative duties that support the cadets and ship's officers training components
• Assisting in the development and completion of port-call activities (if applicable)
• Serves on watch for alcohol testing and gangway watches
• Completes daily health and safety inspections of cadet berthing/common areas
• Supervises various cleaning details (AM/PM)
• Participates in daily musters and accountability evolutions
• Assistance in the completion of the daily "plan of the day" information
• Support of the Senior Regimental Officer Afloat and other Regimental Officers in the completion of their daily duties both afloat and in Port
• Assistance in the determination of random alcohol testing procedures/listings and testing
• Participation on the Ship's Safety Committee

Yeoman or Office Manager

A yeoman job is essentially an office or administrative position. Duties might include filling out or transcribing reports, organizing and sorting files, handling phone and in person communications, keeping up records and performing other administrative and office functions. A yeoman must demonstrate computer fluency, strong communication skills and attention to detail. Data entry skills are a huge plus.

Description of Duties:

• Serves as the primary point of contact for cadets and ship's officers
• Clerical and administrative duties that support the cadets and ship's officers training components
• Assistance in the completion of customs documents, arrival and departure information, documentation processes and maintenance, and discharges
• Assisting in the development and completion of port-call activities (if applicable)
• Assistance in the completion of the daily "plan of the day" information
• Support Senior Officers or Departmental Heads in the completion of their daily duties both afloat and in Port
• Assistance in the determination of random alcohol testing procedures/listings

Additional Information:

Salary/Compensation: The salary is based on a daily rate of pay and will commensurate with license, certification and experience. Housing and all meals are included while aboard the Training Ship.

Cruise Technology Support Technician

As a member of the IT staff, reporting to the Network Manager and User Support Manager,
this individual provides technology support for the training vessel, shore side support to
the TSSOM and other Academy vessels while in Castine, and day to day Helpdesk support of
end users. This individual shall sail with the training ship whenever it is deployed. This is a
12-month, staff union position with benefits.

DUTIES

Responsible for all duties associated with providing technical support services to the ship.
Troubleshoots computer hardware, software, and associated peripherals on all training vessels and on campus.
Responsible for connecting and disconnecting communication cables when dockside.
Responsible for various vessel satellite and communication systems.
Supports network hardware, software, and connectivity technology on the training vessel.
Is system administrator for email and other ship servers and systems.
Trains and supervises cruise helpdesk student workers.

The Chief of Staff supports the President in execution of the strategic plan, including advising the President on the operational and fiscal impact of planning alternatives. The incumbent will assess the effects of innovative programs and strategies, providing strategic recommendations based on their findings.

DUTIES
-Serves as principal aide and executive officer to the President including managing day to day administrative and internal operational functions of the Academy; supports the President in dealing with topics important to faculty, staff, students, and public affairs; directly handles matters of institutional importance on behalf of the President, as appropriate.
-Manages execution and documentation of the Strategic Plan.
-Prepares and contributes to the preparation of reports, briefings, presentations, and responses on institutional and strategic issues, as appropriate.
-Manages TSSOM ship management activities with Master and Chief Engineer, supporting crewing, operations, coordination, safety, statutory compliance, scheduling/long range planning, special projects and policy implementation.
-Manages deliverables, documentation requests and compliance with the terms outlined the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between the United States of America Department of -Transportation Maritime Administration and the Academy.
-Communicates effectively with regulatory agencies having authority over MMA operations.
-Oversight of Castine, Brunswick, Penobscot, and Bucksport properties, including site visitations and event support.
-Participates with the President and other senior officers in institutional planning, policy development, and problem resolution.
-Serves as a member of the senior leadership team and leads meetings of the leadership team at the direction of the president in the absence of the President.
-Serves as a member of the Academy emergency response team at the direction of the President.
-When designated by the President while the President is away from campus, serves as the officer in charge subject to the direction of the President. Represent the President with external organizations as appropriate.
-Manages assigned staff as needed.
-Manages large scale projects of the Academy on time and budget.

The Field Service Technician (FST) is primarily engaged in completing preventive maintenance tasks on Varian Medical Systems (VMS) linear accelerator and imaging systems, ensuring that our customers’ equipment operates efficiently. The Hardware FST is responsible for performing preventative maintenance on all designated VMS equipment according to instructions and company guidelines. Each FST operates in a designated field service region and represents VMS.

Job Role:
• Proactively perform specific periodic and preventative maintenance activities on Linear Accelerators and associated medical equipment outside of normal business hours per documented procedures.
• Manage time and maintain a daily/weekly schedule to effectively perform preventative maintenance on systems throughout the service region.
• Understand and recognize the need to escalate incidents when necessary and/or request additional assistance from more tenured representatives or leadership.
• Maintain administrative duties, which includes timely completion and submission of field service work orders and expense reports along with management of consignment (parts) and other required documentation according to VMS procedures.
• Communicate required follow up actions to primary assigned representative.

Minimum Required Skills and Knowledge:
• Excellent time management and professional communication skills both internal to Varian and externally to customers.
• Ability to develop and maintain strong customer relationships through utilization of strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Frequent use and application of technical documentation (both electronic and paper documents), standards, principles, concepts, and techniques in the field.
• Basic knowledge of electronic, electro-mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and plumbing systems. Familiar with basic operation of handheld test equipment used for verification/checkout of electronic equipment to include Digital Multimeter (DVM/DMM), and Digital Oscilloscope.
• Basic technical experience with micro-computers/PC based systems.
• Basic technical knowledge and experience with simple hand tools.
• Maintain Vendor Credentialing status and compliance with both company and customer defined requirements necessary to gain customer site access, unless prohibited by law. These requirements vary by client and may include but are not limited to: Proof of valid identification (photo, driver’s license, SSN) Criminal background checks, Drug screens, Immunizations (Hep B, MMR, Varicella, Influenza, Tetanus, COVID-19), Annual TB testing, and other assigned training.
• Minimum: HS Degree or Equivalent Preferred: Vocational training or military experience with electronics.

Other Desired Skills and Knowledge:
• Be able to understand and utilize the escalation process to Field Service Representative, Management, Service Delivery and Support, Product Support Engineering, Applications Required Certifications and Training: Has completed all required VMS training classes for HW Preventive Maintenance.
• Experience Level with Business Tools: Familiar with business tools such as E-mail, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Experience with HCM (e.g., Workday) or equivalent ERP product and productivity software desired.
• Strong ability to manage customer expectations while building and maintaining positive relationships.

Note: Candidate must live within close proximity to the Greater Boston Area. This is a field based "remote" position that requires onsite work at several local customer locations. Varian will provide a fleet vehicle (mid-size SUV) approved for business and personal use, laptop, iPhone, and all tools required. Valid drivers license required.

Pre-Requisite/ Qualification:

High School Diploma (U.S.)/ Proof of Completion of Formal Education or Relevant Craft Certificate (where applicable).
Successful Military Discharge – Preferred for U.S.
Graduate of Trade School or University where knowledge and training acquired are applicable to job requirements – Preferred.
Valid Unlimited 3rd Mate Licenses (Home country and Flag state)
Knowledge of all technical calculations required for the safe operation of the marine aspect of the vessel.
Basic computer skills
Valid medical examination and vaccination certificates for area of operation.
Valid GMDSS License.
Lifeboatman Certificate.

DUTIES:

The underlying expectation is that all duties are carried out in compliance with the Company Operational Discipline expectations and HSE requirements. When considering assignment of duties for the 3rd Mate, the Supervisor and the 3rd Mate will apply the rules of task planning to determine if the assigned role is appropriate. This means confirming that the individuals involved have the knowledge, skills, and experience to carry out the task, and the task plan complies with policy before they are authorized to proceed.

General Duties:

Operations/Maintenance:

Exercise control of the safe navigation of the vessel in order to ensure that all navigation operations are carried out in accordance with Company policies and procedures, regulations and sound marine practices.
Become familiar with the vessel’s bridge and navigation equipment; Assist with voyage planning and rig move operations.
Provide assistance during anchoring operations.
Provide assistance in ensuring that the vessel’s navigational equipment is maintained, fully functional and tested in accordance with SOLAS, Classification, and Flag State regulations.
Assist with maintenance of deck equipment, firefighting and lifesaving equipment and marine department lifting equipment (as required), and update records accordingly.
Assist with maintaining the vessel in a seaworthy condition.
Assist with maintaining the watertight integrity of the vessel, loading and storage of consumables, securing of supply vessels and helicopter operations.
Assist with carrying out the vessel’s Class Surveys as well as other regulatory inspections and audits.
Provide assistance in ensuring the vessel complies with local and international pollution regulations.
Assist in maintaining the vessel in a stable condition and at the correct draft and trim.
Assist with running hydrophones and subsea beacons.
Make regular use of the onboard DP simulator for training purposes, where available.
Ensure that all defects and anomalies are reported to your supervisor or the Master.
Assist as required with maintaining and carrying out PM’s on all marine department equipment under the direction of the Chief Mate/Senior Mate/2nd Mate.
Gain familiarity with the vessel’s dynamic positioning equipment, and work towards gaining a Nautical Institute DP Certificate.
Personnel:

Promote and maintain good working relationships with other departments, third-party personnel and Customer representatives.
Mentor, coach, develop and train crew members to ensure they are competent to work at their current and next job level.
Provide leadership and motivation to the marine crews. Apply continuous improvement process.
Participate fully in the annual performance appraisal process.
Apply appropriate accountability regarding recognition; recommend promotion or disciplinary action up to and including discharge.
