The 3rd Mate acts as officer of the watch, assists in the oversight of shipboard maintenance, and provides Cadet training throughout the year including the annual sea-term. As a junior officer in the Deck Department, reports to the Chief Mate as Deck Department head. At a minimum must possess all USCG Certificates and Licenses, and all STCW endorsements required of a 3rd Mate/ OICNW. Must possess a valid TWIC and passport.
DUTIES
• Performs all duties normally associated with a 3rd Mate’s position.
• Ship's Safety Officer
• Responsible for the inventory, maintenance and repair/replacement of all safety equipment.
• Will supervise and train students of varying experience levels in practical operation of all deck department deck machinery, tools, and safety equipment.
• Work closely with the Ship’s Boatswain and other officers conducting semester and sea-term
maintenance on the training ship.
• As a member of a damage control team, responsible for training students in firefighting, damage control, rescue, and evacuation techniques.
• Frequently act as a safety observer during any evolution involving groups of students; adhere to and train students in Safety Management System principles and best practices.
• Responsible for maintaining deck department tools, work spaces, and storage spaces in a neat and orderly manner.
• Responsible for objectively evaluating student performance.
• Responsible for assisting or directing any pilot transfer, anchoring, mooring, gangway, or cargo operations as assigned by the Chief Mate.
• Stand watches as a licensed deck officer, in port or underway, as assigned by the Chief Mate.
• Is assigned to the vessel and as such participates in all deployments.
• As a uniformed officer will comply with uniform regulations as modified by the Master.
• Other duties may be assigned.
SKILLS
• Thorough knowledge and familiarity with all shipboard systems and equipment.
• Experience as Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch.
• Experience in, or willingness to learn, teaching and objective evaluation of Cadets.
• Excellent physical health and evidence of a positive mental attitude.
• Ability to work with people in a close, intense environment while providing effective leadership.
• Ability to teach proper use of Safety Management Systems in performance of assigned tasks.
• Requires basic ECDIS certification (type specific training will be provided), and basic proficiency in MS office applications.
• Familiarity with Maintenance and inventory tracking application similar to ABS' NS Enterprise (NSE)

QUALIFICATIONS
• Valid MMC - Third Mate – Unlimited tonnage, Oceans with all applicable STCW endorsements: BST, Advanced Firefighting, OICNW, Survival Craft.
• Proficiency in fast rescue craft (FRC) preferred
• Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC)
• Valid USCG Medical Certificate - STCW expiry
• Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
• Valid US Passport
• Prior teaching experience preferred.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
• Candidate must pass a pre-employment physical examination, drug test, and be deemed fit for duty at sea.
• The physical requirements as outlined in the NVIC 04-08, as updated periodically by the U.S. Coast Guard, are herein incorporated.
• Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
• Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms.
• Tolerate exposure to extreme weather conditions including, rain, snow, sleet and high winds and extremes of temperatures.
• Use hands to manipulate objects, tools or controls.
• Reach and work overhead with arms and hands.
• Open and close water tight doors of 55 pounds or more.
• Work in areas of highs noise and or low light.
• Work aloft at heights above 6 ft.
• Work in confined spaces.

• Participation in MMA's USCG Approved drug testing program is required.
