SMS Communications

Massachusetts Maritime Academy may send SMS (Short Message Service) or text messages to students and other authorized individuals who have provided prior express consent to receive such communications.

SMS messages may include, but are not limited to:

  • Enrollment and registration reminders
  • Academic notifications
  • Billing and financial reminders
  • Event notifications
  • Campus operational updates
  • Emergency notifications
  • Other essential institutional communications

SMS messages will not be used for unrelated third-party marketing.

 

Consent to Receive SMS Messages

By providing your mobile phone number through an Academy form, portal, or other enrollment process and affirmatively opting in, you consent to receive SMS messages from Massachusetts Maritime Academy.

  • Message frequency may vary.
  • Message and data rates may apply based on your mobile carrier plan.
  • Consent to receive SMS messages is not a condition of enrollment or academic participation.

Opt-in consent will be documented and maintained in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.

Information We Collect for SMS

Information collected for SMS/text messaging may include:

  • Name or other information necessary to identify the individual and provide appropriate Academy communications

  • Information necessary to administer, deliver, and maintain SMS/text messaging services

Sensitive personal information is not collected through SMS messaging.

Sending confidential or sensitive information via text message is not advised.

This information is used solely to provide Academy-related communications for which the individual has provided consent. Messages may include, but are not limited to, academic and enrollment notifications, administrative reminders, billing or financial reminders, event information, campus operational updates, emergency notifications, and other official Academy communications.

Data Sharing and Protection

Mobile information and SMS/text messaging opt-in consent will not be shared with third parties or affiliates for their own marketing or promotional purposes. The Academy does not sell, rent, or otherwise provide mobile telephone numbers or SMS/text messaging consent information to third parties or affiliates for marketing or promotional purposes.

The Academy may share mobile telephone numbers and related information with trusted service providers that assist the Academy in delivering SMS/text messages, such as messaging service providers. These service providers may use the information only to provide services on behalf of the Academy and are not authorized to use the information for their own marketing or promotional purposes.

Individuals may withdraw their consent to receive SMS/text messages at any time by following the opt-out instructions provided in Academy messages, including replying STOP where applicable. Withdrawal of SMS/text messaging consent does not affect an individual's ability to receive services or participate in Academy programs through other available communication methods.

 

Data Security and Retention

Reasonable administrative, technical, and physical safeguards are used to protect personal information used in SMS communications. Records related to SMS consent and delivery may be retained as required for compliance with applicable laws and regulatory requirements.
