POSITION OVERVIEW

This document describes the duties and expectations of the Program Chair for the Advanced BIW Shipbuilding and Marine Operations Program. These may change with each academic year, through discussions between you and your supervisor (s). You will be reviewed and evaluated based on how well you perform these duties.

This position is located at Maine Maritime Academy’s (MMA) Maritime Industrial Workforce Development Training Center in Brunswick, Maine. The anticipated start date is August 1, 2025, although there is some flexibility to schedule an earlier or later date.

The BIW Program Chair is responsible for overseeing initiatives that support and enhance the undergraduate experience of BIW apprentices enrolled in the Ship Design and Ship Production programs. The BIW Program Chairoversees the academic programs at BIW leading to either a degree in Ship Production or the degree in Ship Design.The Program Manager will coordinate grant activities related to delivery of courses mapped to the General Education Program, Ship Design Program, and Ship Production programs offered from the Department of Arts &Sciences and Engineering, respectively.

The BIW Program Chair reports to the Dean of Graduate Online and Continuing Education, and works closely with the Department Chair for Arts & Sciences, Department Chair for Engineering, and the Registrar in all areas related to the undergraduate educational program. The BIW Program Chair is also expected to maintain strong relationships with the Dean of Faculty on issues relevant to undergraduate education, faculty evaluation and student evaluation.

This position will involve supervisory and teaching duties associated with the Ship Production and Ship Degreeprograms at Maine Maritime Academy’s Brunswick, Maine location. The responsibilities for this position will include some or all of the following: teaching, student advising, professional development, scholarship, service, and administrative responsibilities. Teaching is the fundamental responsibility of each faculty member; all faculty members are expected to participate in this activity. In addition, a high degree of “volunteerism/participation” is expected to facilitate the administrative support of the Academy along with effectively imparting your unique capabilities and expertise.

The ideal candidate should possess an understanding of undergraduate courses that may be used for coursework related to a ship design or shipyard operations/production program. A background with real-world experience teaching these courses is essential for this position. Experience managing programs is highly desirable.

LEADERSHIP FOR ACADEMY WIDE UNDERGRADUATE INITIATIVES

Provides support to the Dean of Graduate Online and Continuing Education for faculty evaluations at BIW.
Promotes the importance of First Year Experience including seminars.
Attends Academic Board and oversees PFD sanctions.
Attends Department Chair meetings
Reviews and supports General Education requirements, Ship Production and Ship Design degree requirements, and promotes undergraduate student learning outcomes.
Reviews and supports MMA program review requirements to ensure alignment of resources to achieve program outcomes including; program continuous improvement, student achievement, career placement, and enrollment.

LEADERSHIP FOR PROGRAM AND ACTIVITIES SERVING UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS

Works closely with the Office of Admissions in program planning for Academic Admissions and Orientation programs.
Works closely with the Office of Student Affairs and Services to facilitate the planning of programs designed to enhance student success.

POLICY DEVELOPMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION

Audits student completion of the college’s general education and degree requirements.
Works in collaboration with the Office of Admissions and the Office of Student Affairs and Services on policies and strategies related to student recruitment, retention, and progression toward their degree.

OTHER ASPECTS OF FACULTY PERFORMANCE

Collegiality, as well as professional and ethical conduct, enhances teaching, learning and the general reputation of all persons in the academy. DUTIES

Teach at undergraduate level in areas allocated by the Dean of Graduate Online and Continuing Education and reviewed from time to time by appropriate Department Chair(s).
Assist in the development of learning materials, by preparing syllabus and lesson plans and maintaining records to monitor student progress, achievement and attendance.
Participate in the development, administration and marking of exams and other assessments.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Full Professor or equivalent with degrees in Transportation, Engineering, or Sciences.

PREFERED QUALIFICATIONS

A strong track record of successful teaching, particularly working with under-prepared students. Experience teaching via online modalities.
Minimum of Master Degree in relevant field of study.
Familiar with accreditation processes (e.g., NECHE, ABET).
Experience as Department Chair or equivalent
Familiar with shipyard or industrial workforce experience and academic programs.

Uses recognized quality and safety engineering tools during job performance, this includes methods such as statistical analysis, benchmarking, job hazard analysis and Pareto analysis.
Oversees and manages the medical and health program to include Workers Compensation. Focuses on injury reduction, early return to work, and the reduction of all medical costs.
Interfaces efficiently and proactively with internal operational customers to achieve high level safety goals and objectives.
Manages the Emergency Response Team.
Manages two (3) professional ES&H Specialists.

Vessel Maintenance Technician

Description:
Mystic Seaport Museum owns and operates a rotating fleet of modern and traditional vessels, many of which are passenger-carrying vessels. This position will execute all vessel maintenance procedures and practices on a daily, seasonal, and long term basis for operational museum watercraft and serve as captain aboard various charter vessels

Essential Functions:
- Troubleshoot, diagnose and repair all engineering aspects of vessels, both modern and traditional, power and sail
- Move operational vessels along the waterfront as needed and operate vessels with passengers in accordance with state and USCG regulations
- Execute all aspects of regular vessel maintenance and preservation
- Work aloft on modern and traditionally rigged vessels dockside in a safe and competent manner to troublshoot sytems aloft or aid in up and down rigging.
- Maintain highly organized workflow while remaining flexible to ever changing priorities
- Maintain full environmental compliance, cleanliness and orderliness in all vessels
- Assist with movement or other modification of museum docks, floats, and moorings as assigned
- Operate work boats and supply support services for the Museum as needed
- Work with Marine Operations Manager to plan, coordinate, and supervise volunteer activities related to vessel maintenance
- Maintain all paint and coatings, application and inventory
- Insure secure berths, moorings, and storage of all operational watercraft
- Participate in storm and emergency preparation and cleanup
- Participate in hauling, launching, and movement of all watercraft
- Work as needed in other areas of the shipyard and watercraft area such as rigging, and shipwright work.
- Maintain appropriate professional relationships with others in the field, particularly on the Mystic River
- All other projects as assigned

Qualifications:
- Three years’ experience providing a variety of vessel maintenance services and operation
- Advanced knowledge of marine systems (electrical, plumbing, engine, mechanical, heat and air conditioning, refrigeration, hydraulic) Certification by ABYC preferred.
- USCG 50 ton Inland Master License (or ability to possess by spring 2025)
- Willingness to undergo scheduled and random drug testing with ongoing clean results
- Knowledge of finish work including but not limited to varnish, topside paint and touch up, below decks trim and repair on wood, fiberglass and metal hulled vessels
- Knowledge of traditional rigging, safe work aloft, traditional rigging inspection and maintenance.
- Knowledge of traditional and modern vessel maintenance practices, procedures, and materials
- Knowledge of application of marine coating, traditional and modern to vessels constructed of all materials

This individual will be ultimately responsible for the day-to-day execution, project controls, project engineering, cost, risk, and business management of a particular project.

Complete project buy-out and procurement; including scope review and negotiation, issuance of Subcontracts and Purchase Orders, required submittals, delivery tracking and subcontractor and vendor management.
Reports, Production Reports, and Cost & Revenue Projections.
Monitor construction progress and work collaboratively with the superintendent to resolve any operational issues.
Collaborate and communicate with preconstruction team, owner, architects, engineers and trade partners, develop and maintain relationships with all project stakeholders.
Conduct or represent the company in all project related meetings and provide all required reports and documentation to ensure all partners are informed of project status and potential issues.
Coordinate and communicate with other departments as required; to include BIM, Scheduling, MEP, and Estimating.
Participate in company's continuous improvement program.
Lead the establishment and implementation of project specific safety goals and ensure compliance of company and subcontractor staff with project safety requirements.
Perform additional assignments per supervisor's direction.
Position Qualifications:

Education & Experience:

Min 5 years' experience in a similar construction project management role or related functions plus the willingness to learn and continuously improve processes are required.
Experience in supervisory role with a demonstrated history of decision-making/problem-solving skills are essential.
Proficient computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite, project management software (Procore or similar), accounting cost management software, and scheduling software (Primavera or similar).
OSHA 30 Certification is required, LEED Certification, Lean Certification, CPR/First Aid Training is a plus.

Position Summary:

Support the day-to-day environmental operations including transfer and integration of new Royal Caribbean Group (RCG) assets, ships and the advancement of initiatives related to shipboard operations, shipboard technologies, and management systems. Assists with the development, administration and analysis of environmental, regulatory, and operational management policies and procedures for RCG ships, both at sea and while in over 1000+ ports-of-call and provides day-to-day support to the shipboard teams on Environmental matters.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Support the advancement of Environmental Stewardship initiatives and strategic goals related to shipboard operations including but not limited to Waste & Chemical Management, Water & Wastewater, and Energy & Air.
Oversees wastewater practices of RCG vessels from generation to discharge, identifying best management tracking, analysis and reporting as well as improving source reduction and reuse.
Reviews the annual wastewater management data and reports progress in meeting Environmental Management System (ISO 14001) Objectives and Targets, KPIs and long-term corporate goals.
Contributes to EPA-required reporting and NOI permits for the fleet.
Reviews requests from the fleet regarding exemptions from ABC / SQM criteria when an environmental benefit can be proven.
Assists with training and providing support to Environmental Officers and other shipboard officers as needed, including coordination of Environmental Officers Level I & II Conference.
Monitor the environmental performance of the various ships in the fleet and facilitating activities related to environmental incident prevention, response and reporting.
Provide Support to the fleet on a rotational basis through the Environmental Duty Phone
Support the transfer and integration of RCG assets.
Oversee the Environmental Stewardship Information Management System (ESIMS), including granting and maintaining access.
Support ship environmental operations and compliance, including related management tools for the RCG fleet.
Facilitate RCL Chemical Management Program, including coordination with Supply Chain, Marine Operations and Shipboard Management.
May require up to 20% travel time
