Get Involved

While all of the events at the Academy serve to highlight the reputation of the college and its alumni, Advancement special events also serve at least one other purpose as well, from honoring industry leaders to recognizing national holidays to raising funds for scholarships to encouraging a stronger alumni community.

National Maritime Day

National Maritime Day is a United States holiday created in 1933 to recognize the maritime industry. We observe National Maritime Day by conducting the regimental Change of Command Ceremony, by remembering those in our community who have "passed over the bar" during the previous twelve months, and by recognizing our lead donors at a dinner and medal ceremony in their honor.

Salute to Maritime Person of the Year

Massachusetts Maritime Academy honors a civilian or military leader with a distinguished career of excellence, innovation and service to the maritime industries and other industries we serve and honors them with the Emery Rice Medal at our Salute to the Maritime Person of the Year events. Past honorees have included admirals, captains, CEO’s, and leading maritime executives from around the globe. Our honoree is presented with the Captain Emery Rice medal named for an 1897 Academy graduate and WWI hero. Captain Rice was recognized twice by Theodore Roosevelt for his maritime skill and bravery as a shining example of American courage and fighting spirit.
