Job Summary: The Senior Safety Manager will join a high-performing team of safety professionals delivering innovative, industry-leading safety assessments and practical solutions across a defined geographic region. The primary responsibility of this role is to engage Member executives, operational leaders, and safety teams to strengthen safety culture, enhance accountability, and improve performance.
This role requires frequent interaction with regionally based Members in the Pacific Northwest region, supporting the development and execution of safety management systems, cultural initiatives, and risk reduction strategies. The ultimate objective is to advance Signal’s mission of achieving an incident-free workplace where employees return home safely each day.
Responsibilities:

Interface with Signal Members to provide high-quality safety program support and guidance

Engage executives, managers, and front-line personnel to drive safety ownership and accountability

Deliver structured safety and leadership training programs at Member facilities, including both field-level and executive-level sessions

Facilitate safety workshops, toolbox meetings, and leadership engagements designed to improve performance and cultural alignment

Adapt training methods to effectively engage both craft workers and senior leadership teams

Conduct on-site safety visits, assessments, and evaluations, providing practical solutions to mitigate identified risks

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with 3+ years (or Associate’s with 4+ years) relevant experience

Advise on claim denials, reservations of rights, settlements, mediations, and appeals.

Represent the Company at legal conferences and industry forums on Longshore, workers' compensation, and maritime law

Coverage Authority

Determine coverage under Longshore, workers' compensation, and Maritime Employers Liability (MEL) policies, including policy interpretation, endorsements, exclusions, and jurisdictional questions.

Issue and review coverage position letters on matters such as:

Longshore vs. state workers' compensation jurisdiction

Maritime employment status and situs/status issues

Conflicts among state law, federal Longshore requirements, and maritime doctrine

Litigation Strategy & Management

Qualifications:

7+ years of progressively responsible legal experience, with substantial exposure to:

Longshore and state workers' compensation matters

Insurance coverage analysis and claims oversight

Litigation management and regulatory engagement

Prior experience as Claims Counsel or Claims Attorney at an insurance company or law firm; commercial claims experience preferred.

Deep knowledge of the LHWCA and its extensions, multi-state workers' compensation law, the Jones Act, and related maritime jurisprudence.

Ability to translate complex legal issues into clear, practical business guidance.

In-house experience at an insurance mutual or similarly regulated entity is a plus.
Compensation:
The base salary range for this role is $145,000 – $225,000, commensurate with education, experience, skills, and alignment with the competencies required for the role. Base pay is one component of Signal Mutual's total compensation package, which also includes eligibility for an annual discretionary performance bonus.

TEACHING

Sailing Technician - Assistant Sailing Coach

Maine Maritime Academy is seeking a dynamic and skilled individual to act as a Sail Technician and Assistant Sailing Coach. This role provides technical maintenance of the MMA sailing fleet and provides coaching and instruction for our sailing programs. The successful candidate will have demonstrable experience in sailboat rigging, sail repair, and small craft maintenance, as well as sailing instruction and coaching at the high school, collegiate, or club level. The candidate must hold, or be able to obtain within six months, a US Sailing Level 1 Certification (or equivalent). This position will report directly to the Academy's Sailing Master and Head Sailing Coach.

This role requires hands-on work in support of Academy vessels, collaboration with coaching staff for team training and regatta travel, and student supervision in both instructional and technical settings. All activities are expected to align with MMA's mission and standards of excellence in education, safety, and seamanship. This is a 12-month, full-time position, offering the opportunity to work in a vibrant waterfront community while helping shape the next generation of mariners and sailors. The compensation package is union negotiated and includes full benefits which make it very competitive.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Technical & Maintenance Responsibilities:
• Maintain, rig, and repair the Academy's diverse sailing fleet, including both dinghies and offshore vessels as well as other tasks assigned by the Sailing Master.
• Oversee sail inventory including performing and supervising sail repairs and maintain an organized and stocked sail loft
• Support ongoing upkeep of vessels including fiberglass, woodworking, mechanical, and safety repairs.
• Maintain the cleanliness and organization of the sail float, vessels, and supporting facilities.
• Assist with vessel deliveries and seasonal preparation including launching and haulout; stepping masts.
• Operate travel lifts, cranes, pumps, trailers, and other related mechanical equipment.
• Provide supervision and training to student workers involved in fleet maintenance.
• Ensures the safety of the students at all times. Identifies maintenance and safety issues and works with Waterfront staff to ensure that the vessels, equipment, and facilities are safely maintained.
• Assists in operating and maintenance of the waterfront facilities including boats, equipment, docks, shops, and administrative spaces as an exemplary marina/boat yard facility.

COACHING & INSTRUCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
• Serve as Assistant Coach for the Varsity Sailing Program; working with both dinghies and keelboats
• Travel to Regattas as the person in charge. (Fall season is September+ October; Spring season is March and April; Summer season is July 20 to August 7
• Assist daily practices and skills development sessions in coordination with the Head Sailing Coach and Head Dinghy Sailing Coach.
• Instruct students in PEl00 and other sailing courses, clinics, and experiential learning programs.
• Mentor students in seamanship, teamwork, and safe sailing practices aboard offshore sailboats.
• Serve as a positive representative of MMA during public-facing events and community engagement opportunities.

POSITION OVERVIEW
This document describes duties that the Academy expects of faculty members. These may change with each academic year, through discussions between you and your department head/dean/vice president. You will be reviewed and evaluated on the basis of how well you perform these duties.

The responsibilities for this position will include some or all of the following: teaching, student advising, professional development, scholarship, service, and administrative responsibilities. Teaching is the fundamental responsibility of each faculty member; all faculty members are expected to participate in this activity. In addition, a high degree of “volunteerism/participation” is expected to facilitate the administrative support of the Academy along with effectively imparting your unique capabilities and expertise.

This position is part of MMA’s Advanced BIW Program in Shipbuilding, based at the Maritime Industrial Workforce Training Center.  Students in this program are apprentices at Bath Iron Works (BIW) and earn an associate’s degree in either Ship Design or Ship Production.   

The ideal candidate will teach courses with a focus on physics and engineering (Physics II, Static Mechanics, Strength of Materials, and Material Properties & Testing).  A background in teaching and/or working in these fields is preferred for this position. This is for a one-year term, starting on August 15, 2026.

TEACHING

Shipyard Tank Department Supervisor

The Tank Department supports ship repair production throughout the shipyard including, but not limited to, the Graving Dock, Mobile Boat Hauler (MBH), wet berth, and pier space. Trained members of the Tank Department assist with the vessel docking process on both the Graving Dock and MBH. The Supervisor will oversee all of the department’s operations, which is staffed by experienced laborers and helpers.

Daily Responsibilities:

Delegate daily tasks to department personnel in support of drydocking and ship repair projects, prioritizing efficiency.
Review and analyze work specifications, develop plans to execute work, and memorialize all work performed in written condition reports to the satisfaction of on-site customer representative. Order all consumables and material necessary to complete work.
Interface with project managers and other trade supervisors to coordinate the efficient completion of vessel tank and general cleaning.
Physically supervise all ongoing work and provide direction when necessary.
Execute maintenance and inventory program for tank equipment, including pumps, hoses, pressure washers, and fittings. Order spares when necessary.
Submit daily reports for manpower, identifying work carried out and man hours expended.
Preferred Qualifications/Experience:
Preferred experience as a Vessel Competent Person.
Preferred certificate in work-site OSHA training.
Previous experience with shipyard tank cleaning preferred.
Ability to work from 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (nights and weekends) when needed.
Strong verbal and written skills required.
Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite including but not limited to Outlook, Excel, Word, and Microsoft Project.
Use of personal protective equipment such as respirators, hard hats and safety footwear is required while on work sites.
Bilingual Spanish skills a plus.

Interstate Navigation Company (The Block Island Ferry) is seeking MATES for the ferry vessels for the 2026 summer season. Positions, are full time, seasonal (spring/ summer/ fall).

Interstate Navigation Company (The Block Island Ferry) operates traditional passenger/vehicle ferry vessels between Point Judith and Block Island, R.I. Interstate Navigation provides lifeline year-round ferry transportation of passengers, autos, commercial trucks, palletized freight, cargo and US Mail. Interstate also operates (2) high speed ferry vessels (passenger only), one from Point Judith, and one from Newport to Old Harbor, Block Island, RI.

The Block Island Ferry operates a 5-vessel fleet of USCG inspected Subchapter "K" passenger vessels. The ferry operates with a Master, Mate, and 5-7 deckhands, including single engineering watch stander that is responsible for machinery start-up/shutdown, onboard system monitoring and maintenance. The Captain, Mate, and deck crew report to and operate under the supervision of the Port Captain and Vessel Personnel Manager for the Block Island Ferry.

This is a safety sensitive marine transportation position. The MATE serves as second in command on the ferry, reporting directly to the captain. The MATE serves as the eyes and the ears of the captain, and provides a strong leadership role in coordinating all activities of the ferry crew, including: leading marine safety drills & training for fire, man overboard, abandon-ship, anchoring and general shipboard emergencies. The MATE is responsible for passenger safety, loading and unloading of passenger/vehicle ferry vessels, and general cleaning & maintenance.

Applicants for a MATE position must submit to USCG/DOT drug screening. Applicants must possess a valid TWIC card, and a valid USCG Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC), with an endorsement as Master upon Inland waters, up to 100 GRT. Must have excellent communications skills with a strong work ethic and be committed to exceptional customer service.

Duties

You will direct and accomplish the daily activities during normal operations as well as during routine maintenance, cleaning, and painting, which may be necessary to keep the vessel in shipshape condition.
You will pilot and efficiently handle the tug during normal operations.
You will instruct the deck crew in the operation of deck or safety equipment on board including pumps, winches, life rafts, fire extinguishers or systems, life buoys and lights, fire pumps, etc.
You will handle and tow all floating craft and ships throughout connecting channels or open waters.
