General Statement Of Duties: 

  • Serve as one of seven company officers responsible for providing guidance, support, and advocacy for approximately 200 cadets (first year – senior year) in one company of the Academy’s residential (dorm) community.
  • Assist with further development and ongoing evaluation of the Leadership Lab/Cadet Leadership Development Standard Operating Procedures.
  • As Assistant Director for Student Services, provide leadership, planning and direction to one of seven functional units under the VP of Student Services/Dean of Students (orientation, campus recreation, student activities (including community service), leadership development, student conduct, watch, and care and advocacy).
  • Participate in monthly meetings with directors of functional area units across the State University System, play an active role in appropriate professional associations for functional areas, and coordinate efforts of other company officers related to functional area to ensure delivery of an exceptional student experience to our cadets.
  • Assist with the recruitment, selection and training of upper-class student leaders within the company ∙ Conduct regular inspections of cadet rooms, provide support to cadets in meeting uniform and room inspection standards, help cadets understand how to navigate academic and regimental expectations, supervise cadet leave and liberty.
  • Participate in morning formation (Monday-Friday) at 7:15am during academic year ∙ Serve in an on-site, on-call capacity one night per week throughout the academic year. On call staff share a staff suite for overnight duty.
  • Participate in sea term as assigned – a 52 consecutive day, training ship cruise (typically early January – mid February) for cadets with responsibilities that parallel ‘on shore’ duties (on call responsibilities, providing care, advocacy and support to cadets, etc). All selected candidates must comply with Mass. Maritime Academy military customs, uniforms and ranks and participate in random drug screening.
  • Serve as a disciplinary officer with responsibility for hearings within the company and investigations involving cadets in the company that may be referred to either class or honor board hearings.
  • Participate in coordination and implementation of leadership development, orientation, commencement, move-in and move-out programs and periods which may include evening and weekend responsibilities
  • Must participate in the academy’s safety sensitive position random drug testing program.
  • Serve as a Clery Mandated Reporter
  • Additional duties as assigned by the Commandant and/or Vice President for Student Service

Qualifications and requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Knowledge of methods of college administration with particular emphasis on Maritime or Military Service Colleges.
  • Professional competence as an administrator or maritime officer as evidenced by professional achievement and recognition thereof by professional colleagues.
  • Ability to work effectively with professional, non-professional, and student personnel ∙ Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to serve in on-campus, overnight on call rotation, to serve on sea term, every other year (52 consecutive days off campus) and to work other nights and weekends (during Commencement, Orientation, Move In and other key operational periods).
  • Demonstrated ability to work with high proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and web[1]based programs
  • Required to obtain CPR and First Aid Red Cross certification.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in student personnel, higher education, counseling, or a related field ∙ Two (2) years professional experience working with young adults, with priority given to candidates with experience working in a college/university environment.
  • Experience working with student information system (Banner, Colleague, etc.), with design programs for marketing materials, with social media (Instagram, Tik Tok and Facebook), with Maxient (student conduct system) and with housing assignment software.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion through continuous development and/or the modeling of inclusive behaviors. 

Salary:     $64,000 to $68,000   The Academy offers generous benefits policies and a competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. This position is exempt under the FLSA.
