The Electrical / Electronic Technician reports to the Chief Engineer or his/her designee. Employee is responsible for the maintenance, testing, and repair of the ship's electrical and electronic equipment. Employee will complete assigned duties and tasks as scheduled through consultation with the vessel's 1st Assistant Engineer, and/or 2nd Assistant Engineer. Electrical systems include but are not limited to, shore electrical connection(s), power generation and distribution, lighting, electrically powered deck equipment, engine-room monitoring, engine/bridge controls, alarm systems, navigational equipment, and communications equipment. Sailing experience on board commercial/military vessels, and familiarity with high-voltage electrical systems is required.

• Is assigned to the vessel and as such participates in all deployments and sea terms
• Work closely with the Ship’s engineering officers and logistics coordinator with regard to parts and supplies needed for the maintenance and repair of assigned systems.
• Responsible for identifying and completing needed maintenance/repairs on applicable systems.
• Responsible for testing completed repairs and communicating work performed to the First Engineer for entry into NSE maintenance tracking software.
• Active participant in annual Periodic Safety Test Procedure (PSTP) as it applies to related expertise.
• Frequently supervise and train students of varying experience levels.
• Act as a safety observer during any evolution involving groups of students and completing permits to work, risk analysis, or other documentation required by Safety Management Systems.
• Responsible for objectively evaluating student performance in cooperation with the ship’s engineering officers.
• As a uniformed crew, will comply with the regimental uniform regulations as modified by the Master of the Training Ship.
• Other duties as assigned.

SKILLS
• Thorough knowledge and familiarity with high (6600 VAC), medium and low voltage electrical/electronic and associated equipment.
• Minimum 5 years’ experience as a shipboard, industrial, or military electrician.
• Willingness to teach and objectively evaluate Cadets.
• Ability to work with people in a closed, intense environment while providing effective leadership.
• Professional presentation, appearance, and work ethic.
• Ability to work irregular/extended hours/weeks, including night and weekend duties as required.

• Merchant Mariner Credential with Qualified Member of the Engine Department (QMED) Electrician endorsement and/or ETO endorsement.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
• Candidate must pass a pre-employment background check, physical examination, drug test, and be deemed fit for duty at sea.

The 3rd Mate acts as officer of the watch, assists in the oversight of shipboard maintenance, and provides Cadet training throughout the year including the annual sea-term. As a junior officer in the Deck Department, reports to the Chief Mate as Deck Department head. At a minimum must possess all USCG Certificates and Licenses, and all STCW endorsements required of a 3rd Mate/ OICNW. Must possess a valid TWIC and passport.

DUTIES

• Performs all duties normally associated with a 3rd Mate’s position.

• Responsible for the inventory, maintenance and repair/replacement of all safety equipment.
• Will supervise and train students of varying experience levels in practical operation of all deck department deck machinery, tools, and safety equipment.

OVERALL PURPOSE OF POSITION

• Performs preventative maintenance on equipment such as filter changes, lubrication, inspection, and adjustment of belts and pulleys, cleaning of boiler and condenser tubes, cooling tower maintenance, ballast replacement, and bearing replacement
• Operates and maintains water chillers, cooling towers, pumps, heat exchangers, air handling equipment, fans, automatic temperature controls, electrical switchgear, distribution switchboards and panels, sprinkler systems, fire alarm systems, valves, plumbing fixtures, and other mechanical and electrical equipment and systems in the building
• Regularly checks and records temperature, pressure, water flow, airflow, and chemical readings
• Perform duties required to correct emergency conditions such as sewer back-ups and water infiltration
• Helps to remove snow and Ice from the building walkways
• Performs painting as needed

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
• Knowledge and understanding of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems

· Identify areas for improvement within the maritime industry related to the safety of seafarers, vessels, and the marine environment;

· Track and report on the progress and status of assigned investigations, ensure the timely completion of all assigned investigations; and

· Present findings to a broad array of stakeholders (e.g., owners, operators, senior management, industry leaders, and internal teams).

Preferred Experience:

· Demonstratable experience in marine safety, marine investigation, human factors, and root cause analysis;

· Proven technical writer of marine legislation and marine guidance documentation;
