Work Study Manual for Students

Federal Work Study provides jobs to students who have financial need to help them pay for their out-of-pocket educational expenses. There are numerous on campus jobs that pay $15.00 per hour.  Community service work study jobs are available off campus, at a pay rate of up to $17 an hour. Students can earn up to their award amount over the academic year and can work up to 5 hours per week.  Work study students receive payment through direct deposit and can use this money for any out-of-pocket expenses that they may have.

Work Study is available throughout the academic year.  If a student is awarded work study, an email is sent to the student in early August with step-by-step instructions.  Students new to the Federal work study program are reminded to bring their passport or birth certificate to campus with them to complete hiring paperwork.

Federal Work Study is the only financial aid award that cannot be applied directly to the student's bill at MMA.  Work study is meant to assist the student with any out-of-pocket expenses that the student may have during the academic year.  As such, the student will submit a timesheet each week for hours actually worked and will receive payment (via direct deposit to the student's own bank account) every other week.  If a student does not secure a job, or does not actually work, the student does not receive any pay.

Under no circumstances should a student work during any scheduled class time, even if that class is released early or cancelled for any reason.  Students who submit work study timesheets with hours that conflict with their official class schedule as shown on college records, will not be paid for those hours.  The student may also lose the privilege to work on campus moving forward.

Work study is a type of financial aid and is based on the information that you provide when filing the FAFSA.  If you qualify for Federal Work Study, you will see it as part of your financial aid offer.  If you're not sure, you should log into the Self Service Portal and follow the link for Financial Aid.  Once on the Financial Aid section, using the drop down menu at the top, you can either select "My Awards' or "Offer Letter".  If you see Federal Work Study listed, then you can participate in the program (as long as you accepted the offer).

You can view the list of available jobs at the top of this page.  At the beginning of the year new jobs are added on a regular basis.  When you find one that you are interested in you should contact the Supervisor listed at the bottom of the form to ask if they are still looking for work-study students.

After meeting with the Supervisor, they will give you a Work Authorization Form, which indicates that they are interested in hiring you.

You must bring that Work Authorization Form to the Office of Student Financial Services, along with the following documents:

Students who worked at MMA in the last 6 months need only bring the Student Data Form. The other forms are needed only if you wish to change any information on the form.

After all paperwork is presented in person at the Office of Student Financial Services in Flanagan Hall, you will sign a contract, outlining the specifics of the job. A copy of the contract will be emailed to you as well as the supervisor. Once the contract has been received, you may begin working.

The MMA Payroll Office will email a timesheet template to the student and the supervisor. You should use this template when submitting your timesheets.
