POSITION OVERVIEW-
This document describes duties that the Academy expects of faculty members. These may change with each academic year, through discussions between you and your department head/dean/vice president. You will be reviewed and evaluated on the basis of how well you perform these duties. This position will directly support the Arts and Sciences department. The responsibilities for this position will include some or all of the following: teaching, student advising, professional development, scholarship, service, and administrative responsibilities. Teaching is the fundamental responsibility of each faculty member; all faculty members are expected to participate in this activity. In addition, a high degree of “volunteerism/participation” is expected to facilitate the administrative support of the Academy along with effectively imparting your unique capabilities and expertise.

TEACHING -
Teaching responsibilities include time spent in the classroom, laboratory, and in immediate preparation for these; maintaining and improving competence in subjects being taught as well as in teaching itself; preparing contemporary teaching materials; conferring with students on course materials; directing individual and group studies and practica; reviewing written examinations and papers; evaluating presentations and supervising independent study projects.

ADVISING -
Student advising includes time spent meeting with students regarding academic, curricular and career matters.

SERVICE -
Academy service includes, but is not limited to, service on the Faculty Senate, Academy and departmental committees. Professional service implies the use of academic and professional expertise to serve your profession, the community, the state, the nation, or the world.

SCHOLARSHIP -
Scholarship enables individuals to remain current in the theory, practice, knowledge, skills and/or pedagogy of their disciplines. For some, scholarship and continued professional development may mean hands-on development and training in industry. The scholarly expectations of faculty should be consistent with the mission and purposes of Maine Maritime Academy.

OTHER ASPECTS OF FACULTY PERFORMANCE -
Collegiality, as well as professional and ethical conduct, enhances teaching, learning and the general reputation of all persons in the academy. Therefore, all faculty members are expected to serve in a collegial fashion and in accordance with professional and ethical principles when dealing with other faculty members, students, administrators, and members of the public.

DUTIES-
Teach at the undergraduate level in areas allocated by the Department Head or Dean. Contribute to the development, planning and implementation of a high quality curriculum. Assist in the development of learning materials, preparing lesson plans and maintaining records to monitor student progress, achievement and attendance.
Participate in departmental and faculty seminars aimed at sharing research outcomes and building interdisciplinary collaboration within and outside the department.
Participate in the development, administration and marking of exams and other assessments of students within and external to your department.
Inform students of their progress by promptly returning assignments, quizzes, papers and exams.
Contribute to departmental, faculty, or Academy-wide working groups or committees as requested.
Maintain one’s own continuing professional development.
Expected to advise students in the engineering undergraduate programs, and assist in department academic and administrative functions including serving on departmental and campus-wide committees.
All faculty are expected to demonstrate their ongoing commitment to academic excellence; that is, to the conduct of possible research, publication, teaching and other forms of knowledge transfer, at the highest levels of achievement.

Due to the unique nature of the training ship, incumbents may be assigned in different capacities as the needs of the ship dictate and their background allow.

The Empire State is a public vessel of the United States, solely operated for the training and licensure of the cadet midshipmen. While onboard, the cadets are engaged in classroom lecture, maintenance and repair. Additionally, cadets are involved in watch keeping, drills, and training exercises all in preparation for their eventual licensure. There will be over 500 cadets onboard to account with approximately 20% in ROTC (Reserve Officers' Training Corps) and preparing for commissioning in the Armed Services following graduation and licensure.

The training days are geared to maximize the experience of the cadets and flexibility is a requirement regarding daily scheduling of duties.

Stewards

Ship housekeepers are responsible for cleaning and sanitizing spaces and items aboard the ship.

Description of Duties:

• Meticulous clean and sanitize the staff and cadets cabins, public areas, and crew quarters. Effectively cleaning and sanitizing the vessel, ship housekeepers can help ensure the passengers' safety
• Ensure high standards of hygiene and guest comfort through tasks like vacuuming, sanitizing, restocking amenities, handling linens,
• Mopping floors throughout the ship
• Replenish toiletries, stationery and ensuring amenities are always stocked
• Handling soiled linens, towels, and bedding, sending them to laundry, and returning fresh supplies

Regimental Duty Officer

Description of Duties:

• Serves as a mentor and training officer for the cadets completing sea term activities
• Various administrative duties that support the cadets and ship's officers training components

• Serves on watch for alcohol testing and gangway watches
• Completes daily health and safety inspections of cadet berthing/common areas
• Supervises various cleaning details (AM/PM)

Yeoman or Office Manager

A yeoman job is essentially an office or administrative position. Duties might include filling out or transcribing reports, organizing and sorting files, handling phone and in person communications, keeping up records and performing other administrative and office functions. A yeoman must demonstrate computer fluency, strong communication skills and attention to detail. Data entry skills are a huge plus.

Description of Duties:

• Serves as the primary point of contact for cadets and ship's officers
• Clerical and administrative duties that support the cadets and ship's officers training components
• Assistance in the completion of customs documents, arrival and departure information, documentation processes and maintenance, and discharges

Job Description:

The State University of New York Maritime College is currently looking to employ officers and staff for this year's summer training aboard T.S. EMPIRE STATE.

The TS Empire State is looking for temporary personnel to teach and conduct training evolutions during this period. A full range of marine education and training topics will be offered to the cadets; therefore, the school is searching for flexible instructors. Candidates need to be comfortable with teaching a full range of topics including all aspects of maintenance and repair, ship and boat handling, line handling and mooring, all levels of navigation, lifeboats, life rafts, ships construction, stability, firefighting, safety and safety inspections, license preparation, and any other related topics.

The training days are geared to maximize the experience of the cadets and flexibility is a requirement regarding daily scheduling of duties.

The Full Cruise appointment is anticipated to begin April 30, 2026 and ends July 20, 2026. However, you may apply and be considered for one of the following.

Cruise A Half: April 30, 2026 - June 09, 2026
Cruise B Half: June 10, 2026 - July 20, 2026
Full Cruise: April 30, 2026 - July 20, 2026

Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

• US Passport
• Transportation Worker Identification Credentials (TWIC)
• Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) - Note: All applicants must have an MMC
• Valid Medical Certificate - Note: Note: The Medical Certificate is issued with the original MMC; however it must be renewed every 2-years
• Demonstrated ability in teaching applicable materials (for academic appointments)
• Recent sea experience (for operational appointments)
• DOT/USCG Periodic Drug Testing Documentation
Letter from employer indicating that you have been in a random testing program meeting the criteria of 46 CFR 16.230 for at least 60 days (from the first day on the ship) during the previous 185 days and have not failed nor refused to participate in a chemical test for dangerous drugs.

OR

Passed a chemical test for dangerous drugs, required under Title 46 CFR 16.210 within the previous 185 days (from the first day on the ship).

A COPY OF ALL REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION MUST BE PROVIDED PRIOR TO THE EFFECTIVE DATE OF APPOINTMENT. IF THE REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION IS NOT PROVIDED BY THE EFFECTIVE DATE OF APPOINTMENT YOUR APPLICATION CAN NO LONGER BE CONSIDERED FOR EMPLOYMENT. • United State Coast Guard (USCG) license or related industry/teaching experience

Additional Information:

Salary/Compensation: The salary is based on a daily rate of pay and will commensurate with license, certification and experience. Meals are included. Travel expenses may be reimbursed and will be assessed on a case by case basis.

•Performs troubleshooting and documentation, and assists in the resolution of problems discovered on shift
•Performs daily maintenance, overhauls, calibration, troubleshooting, repair/replacement and removal/installation of plant equipment and systems.
•Makes decisions and recommends appropriate repair techniques for plant equipment to peers, supervisors, plant management.
•Conducts excitation system inspections and preventive maintenance
•Proficient in operating material handling equipment
•Develops and implements plant operating procedures
•Understands relationship of equipment to plant systems
•May provide instruction and teaching to lower-level employees
•Ensures strict adherence to safety, health and environmental procedures as they relate to plant operations and maintenance including but not limited to Lockout Tagout, Job Safety Analysis, Confined Space, Hot Work, Electrical Safety and PPE

Education, Experience, and Skill Requirements:
