**SUMMER** - Sailing Instructors - All Levels

Plymouth Yacht Club seeks an energetic, responsible Sailing Instructor to join our Sailing Instructor team. We are a busy, full-service club located on Plymouth’s downtown waterfront, serving over 1,200 members year-round. We pride ourselves on having excellent seasonal staff, waterfront operations and sailing programs.

Our Sailing Program season consists of 2-week sessions over the span of 8 weeks, based out of the PYC Sailing Center & Boathouse. Our Junior courses range from Introductory to Advanced One-design racing, ages 7-17, as well as Adult Sailing on weekends and in the evenings. This job is primarily as a Junior Program instructor, with options to teach Adult on-water lessons.

Sailing Instructors will work as a team under the guidance of both our Program Director and our Club Managers. Instructors take a collaborative approach to all aspects of teaching, staff coverage, safety and maintenance. They also work closely with our boat maintenance technicians to ensure equipment is running properly. Work schedules are created with flexibility to allow for outside interests and employment.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Teach using a broad range of lesson materials and equipment: video, white-board illustration, land-based boats, dock-side rigging and on-water boats
Be able to fully explain and teach concepts related to sailing, seamanship, and maritime skills. Examples include right-of-way, points of sail, current flow, knots for specific uses, float plans, etc.
Be able to use maritime apps for wind, radar and current as part of teaching classes and developing class daily float plans.
Assist with participant arrival and pick up.
Lead by example, setting the tone for positive youth development.
Communicate effectively with co-workers, parents, Club Management and especially students, to ensure operations run smoothly.
Create a safe, comfortable and friendly environment.
Ensure safe daily operations by upkeep and use of assigned safety equipment and understanding of emergency procedures.
Manage, maintain and care for program equipment and supplies.

Qualifications:

US Sailing Level 1 Certification. PYC will reimburse candidates who complete their Level 1(or Level 2) certification for this position. ½ at end of season, ½ if they return for the following season.
Current First Aid and CPR certificates prior to program start. (PYC offers this for free.)
Ideal candidates would have:
Comfort with and enthusiasm for outdoor activities, in various weather conditions.
Experience in sailing instruction, general education, or youth programming preferred.
Strong communications skills including comfort with learners of all ages and strong oral communication & interpersonal skills.

Compensation & Schedule:

This is a seasonal, full-time summer position. Hours can be flexible, ranging from 20-40 hours per week depending upon the candidate’s availability. Gas reimbursement for a commute over 20 miles (one-way) can be offered. A staff schedule is created for the entire season prior to season-start, based upon each staff member’s stated availability and class preferences. During the season, changes for time-off requests are made in collaborative instructors meetings.

Staff Training events will run from June 17 through June 21. A typical work week will be Monday-Friday from 7:45am – 5:00pm, with AM/ PM program classes taking place June 24, 2024 through August 16, 2024. The Adult program operates in the evenings and weekends.

Plymouth Yacht Club is a non-profit, member-owned club dedicated to fostering all aspects of boating interests for its community. Our Junior Sailing Program is open to the general public, allowing the youth community at large to gain access to low-cost sailing and seamanship programs.

Located on Plymouth Waterfront next to the Mayflower, we seek to help continue the long maritime history of our town. Many of our sailors come from multi-generational mariner families, both commercial and recreational.
