Technical Superintendent
Our client, an owner and operator of a bulk vessels, is looking for an experienced Technical Superintendent to join their team. In this role, you will ensure that the vessels are operating in an efficient manner while maintaining company and regulatory guidelines. Reporting to the Director of Technical, you will be involved in the day to day operation of the vessels as well as planned dry-docks and repair periods. The ideal candidate will have the following:
BS Marine Engineering, Maritime Academy preferred
Time at sea as First Engineer/Chief Engineer is ideal
Previous shoreside port engineer/technical superintendent experience preferred, experience with tankers a must
Must have previous experience and be comfortable managing vessel drydocks and shipyard periods, both domestic and international yards
Able to work independently within the confines of company policies and procedures
Familiar with Class and USCG regulations, experience with foreign flagged vessels is a plus
Comfortable with Microsoft and ABS NS5 software
Must be currently authorized to work in the US, no visa sponsorship at this time

The Operations Control Center Associate ensures that all incoming facilities work requests from students, faculty, staff and other members of the Tufts Community into the Operations Division (Facilities, Events, Emergencies, etc.) are properly interpreted and triaged for both emergency and proper assignment purposes. Ensure the integrity, accuracy and completeness of Facilities repair and maintenance work order data, files, front-end communications and information flows.
What You'll Do
-Responsible for receiving, prioritizing and processing work requests in Maximo – Facilities Work Management system.
-Ability to be trained in and ultimately read and interpret proprietary building automation system dashboards (e.g. Johnson Controls), respond to equipment sensors and alarms that send data and readings to a dashboard when out of tolerance and create necessary work-orders in response to a variety of circumstances.
-Read / interpret diagnostic building automation screens.
-Have an understanding of basic mechanical, electrical and plumbing equipment and systems and understand basic actions that can be taken to regulate such equipment in accordance with manufacturer guidelines.
-Act as the communications center and dispatch for trades and professional staff.
-Clarifies service needs with customers through effective and professional verbal and written interactions.
-Secures necessary approvals for charges associated with billable work (versus baseline maintenance work).
-Handles requests from outside contractors in gaining access to areas throughout campus, giving them contractor keys, keeping records of who has what and making sure they are returned in a timely manner.
-Applies business rules and possesses subject matter understanding of Tufts facilities, systems and assignment rules and data standards such that incoming work is classified in accordance with work type, system, asset and other work management classifications.
-Understands equipment safety protocols and ensures such protocols are log in university systems.
-Understands and coordinates necessary facilities field resources to administer proper safety protocols in accordance with university policy.
-The ability to apply discretion and problem solving skills to an infinite variety of impromptu requests that range from complex to simple as well as emergency (high pressure) and non-emergency circumstances.
-Capable of reading plans, interpreting alarms, assign work to different disciplines and interpret often times complex rules to channel work to the appropriate resources.
-Ability to identify patterns, groupings and other work proclivities such that continuous process improvement opportunities are identified.
-Controls inventories assigned to Facilities Management; receives and catalogs incoming materials.

Pay Range

OVERALL PURPOSE OF POSITION
This position directly supervises day porters, maintenance technicians, and maintenance assistants. Our Engineer III maintains and operates large and small scale HVAC systems, electrical systems, plumbing systems, boiler systems, control systems and their support equipment, responds to tenant service requests, troubleshoots problems, recommends enhancements for all building mechanical and electrical systems and works on special projects assigned by the Chief Engineer. He/she is considered essential personnel and is required to respond to after-hour emergencies.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs preventative maintenance on equipment
Operates and maintains water chillers, cooling towers, pumps, heat exchangers, air handling equipment, fans, automatic temperature controls, electrical switch gear, distribution switch boards and panels, sprinkler systems, fire alarm systems, valves, plumbing fixtures, and other mechanical and electrical equipment and systems in the building
Disassembles, cleans, examines for wear or damage, replaces parts, tests and adjusts mechanical equipment (pumps, fans, dehumidifiers, compressors, condensers, water coolers, cooling towers, etc.)
Participate in the development and implementation of the operating, maintenance, and capital improvement budgets (help with development before next level)
Assist with construction drawing review and construction oversight during customer TI projects
Helps to remove snow and ice from the outside of the building, including around the roof drains
Performs duties required to correct emergency conditions
Fulfills other duties as needed

Overview:
Under the direction of the Deputy Chief of Special Operations, responsible for overseeing and coordinating the maintenance operations of all Boston Fire Department Marine Assets. Manages department budgets as they relate to BFD marine operations. Operates vessels as required in accordance with department policies and procedures. Provides input and direction, as required, on the operation of department vessels. Provides project management oversight as needed for large capital marine projects as well as new builds. Representing the department's marine interests at a variety of municipal, regional, state, and federal meetings.
Responsibilities:
General oversight of the department's maritime assets, to include the marine unit, dive team, and water rescue operations (tech rescue).
Overseen by the Deputy Chief of Special Operations, provides input and oversight of the budgets for the Marine Unit, Dive Team, and Tech Rescue, Water Rescue for all procurement-related goods and services requests with input from the entire Special Operations Command units.
Submit requests for goods and services for marine assets and operations.
Perform scheduled and unscheduled maintenance on all marine vessels, including engines (inboard/outboard, diesel/gasoline), propulsion systems, electrical systems, hydraulic systems, navigation equipment, communication systems, and auxiliary machinery.
Ensure all vessels are in a constant state of operational readiness for emergency response, routine patrols, and other planned activities.
Adhere to all safety protocols and promotes a culture of safety within the marine unit.
Ensure all vessel operations and maintenance procedures comply with local, state, and federal regulations (e.g., US Coast Guard, EPA).
Conduct regular safety inspections of vessels and equipment.
Provide project and executive level management for marine capital projects to include vessel new builds.
May provide training to marine unit personnel on basic vessel maintenance and troubleshooting.
Represent the BFD, as required, at meetings and conferences that relate to marine operations.
Oversee and coordinates BFD marine repair and maintenance programs to ensure robust and sufficient marine firefighting capabilities are maintained.
Coordinate and perform repairs on departmental marine assets.
Coordinate with vendors and departmental stakeholders to ensure maximum uptime.
Minimum Entrance Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field from an accredited college or university.
At least eight (8) years of commercial maritime experience encompassing operations and maintenance management experience.
USCG Licensed Master of 100-ton Near Coastal license required.
Understanding of procurement and budgeting processes.
Strong understanding of CFR33, NFPA, and ABYC standards. ABYC standards certification strongly preferred.
Experience in developing and managing new build construction.
Extensive experience in the repair and maintenance of small, medium, and large municipal rescue and fireboats.
Proficiency in diagnosing and troubleshooting complex mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues on marine vessels.
Aluminum Hull repair and maintenance process and procedures.
Strong understanding of the repair and maintenance of Outboard Engines (Mercury and Evenruide), Diesel Engines (Iveco, CAT, Cummins), Westerbeke Generators, Kohler Generators, Hamilton Jets, Cruisair Systems, Webasto Diesel Heaters.
Understanding and comfort in the repair and maintenance of 3-phase 208 power systems.
Understanding of the maintenance and operation of NFPA Class 2 fire pumping systems.
Work is performed both indoors in a workshop/marina environment and outdoors in various weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and humidity. The position involves exposure to loud noises, fumes, hazardous materials, and confined spaces. Regular physical exertion is required, including standing, walking, bending, stooping, climbing, and lifting up to 50 pounds independently and over 50 pounds with assistance. May be required to work irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, and respond to emergency calls.
Strong written and verbal communication skills are preferred.
