Job Description:
The Building Engineer is responsible for overseeing the overall performance of facility services within the account. This role focuses on, but is not limited to, achieving and exceeding operational efficiency, managing budgets, and maintaining a positive workplace environment for employees. The Building Engineer will help develop and execute strategic initiatives, ensuring the delivery of top-tier operational excellence. This position is integral to managing all services related to facility management.

Job Responsibilities:
Support and lead management and supervisory teams across all shifts, developing standardized operational procedures and providing training and support for site managers.
Liaise with internal teams, vendors, and department heads to coordinate resources, understand deadlines, and address facility-related requests and quality objectives.
Maintain a comprehensive understanding of facility management practices and manage both unionized and non-unionized workforces.
Develop, track, and manage an annual maintenance schedule, ensuring effective communication with key stakeholders and acting as a steward for the facility.
Serve as a change agent to enhance workplace culture and collaborate with quality assurance teams to monitor and report on quality control systems.
Work with the Safety Management Department to ensure compliance with safety procedures and health regulations, utilizing inspection software as needed.
Attend all required meetings, provide internal and external site reports, and lead site teams to meet company and project objectives.
Participate in the affirmative action program and manage recruitment efforts to promote diversity and inclusion within the facility.
Plan and direct team activities to ensure high client satisfaction while implementing best practices to enhance efficiency and manage vendor relationships.
Review service contracts to address facility management needs and monitor staffing levels and departmental schedules for optimal utilization.
Prepare and track labor and expense budgets, manage payment processes, and generate regular reports on budgets, finances, and expenditures.
Develop and implement cost-reduction strategies and enforce appropriate security practices at the facility.

Requirements (Knowledge, Abilities, Skills, and Education and/or Experience:
Diploma, Degree, or Postgraduate qualification in Facility Management, Project Management, Management, or a related field (Recent grads encouraged to apply).
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite with a willingness to learn additional software as needed.
Understanding of project management principles and practices.
Ability to anticipate needs, adapt to changing goals, and manage multiple tasks effectively.
Knowledge of business administration principles with experience managing budgets.
Highly self-motivated with strong judgment and decision-making skills.
Proven ability to interact professionally with all levels of management, clients, and staff.
Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
Strong written and verbal communication abilities.
Must be adaptable and flexible, willing to work nights, weekends, and holidays as required.
Working Conditions and/or Physical Requirements

Site-based operational role.
Ability to lift up to 70 pounds.

Position Summary
The Senior Facilities Systems Manager serves as a key member of the Facilities leadership team, overseeing the day-to-day efficient operations, maintenance, and repair of all Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum building systems at our Boston and Hingham campuses, including HVAC, plumbing, and energy management. This growth-oriented position is expected to support the Museum’s clean energy goals. The position also serves the primary point of contact for systems issues that arise in off-hours that cannot be resolved by the overnight staffing.

Essential Functions and Primary Responsibilities
Install, maintain and repair a variety of equipment such as compressors, heat pumps, fan coil units, fan units, pumps, cooling towers, chillers, and related piping.
Operate and maintain control systems associated with HVAC and refrigeration equipment.
Work from piping diagrams, schematics, blueprints, and sketches to plan, lay out, and troubleshoot complex HVAC systems.
Work with the Director of Facilities and Capital Projects on identifying priorities for capital project planning.
Manage capital projects related to HVAC systems.
Offer solutions and contribute to the analysis of systems upgrades or changes that align with the carbon emissions/clean energy goals for the Museum’s campuses in Boston and Hingham; optimize plant operations for energy savings.
Manage HVAC service contracts.
Schedule service from outside vendors when repair and maintenance cannot be completed in-house; supervises and manages contractors.
Support the Director of Facilities and Capital Projects as project manager, staff supervisor, and in other ways to support the operations as needed.
Follow all Museum and government-required safety protocols.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Required
Trade school graduate preferred, and additional courses in refrigeration and air conditioning installation and repair, and/or prior work experience in systems/mechanics.
Ability to collaborate effectively with other departments.
Ability to troubleshoot and problem solve.
Demonstrated integrity and ability to build trust and work in a sensitive environment (e.g., information privacy and protection of the Museum’s collection).
Very high degree of personal accountability.
Controls experience, preferably in Schneider Electric EcoStruxure Controls or Software House/C-Cure.
Experience in brazing and soldering.
Must possess a valid Massachusetts State Refrigeration License with at least four years’ applicable experience.
Must possess a valid EPA issued Refrigerant Transition and Recovery Certificate (Universal type).
Must possess a Massachusetts driver’s license with a clean driving record.
Ability to climb and work from ladders, scaffolds, lifts, and in pits.
Ability to work and multitask in an environment subject to frequently changing priorities and time deadlines.
Able to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team in a collaborative environment. Flexible and problem-solving attitude with a customer service orientation.
Ability to manually lift, push, and pull up to 60 pounds.
Ability to operate an aerial lift.
Good computer skills, including Google Workspace.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Able to give clear instructions.
Commitment to advancing the ISGM’s strategic initiatives, and especially carbon reduction and clean energy initiatives.
Must be available for on call duty 24/7, as needed.
Legal authorization to work in the United States.
Satisfactory background check.

OVERALL PURPOSE OF POSITION
This position maintains and operates large and small-scale HVAC systems, electrical systems, plumbing systems, boiler systems, control systems, and support equipment. This position also responds to tenant service requests, diagnoses and repairs building mechanical, and electrical systems and works on special projects assigned by the Chief Engineer.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
• Performs preventative maintenance on equipment such as filter changes, lubrication, inspection, and adjustment of belts and pulleys, cleaning of boiler and condenser tubes, cooling tower maintenance, ballast replacement, and bearing replacement
• Operates and maintains water chillers, cooling towers, pumps, heat exchangers, air handling equipment, fans, automatic temperature controls, electrical switchgear, distribution switchboards and panels, sprinkler systems, fire alarm systems, valves, plumbing fixtures, and other mechanical and electrical equipment and systems in the building
• Regularly checks and records temperature, pressure, water flow, airflow, and chemical readings
• Perform duties required to correct emergency conditions such as sewer back-ups and water infiltration
• Helps to remove snow and Ice from the building walkways
• Performs painting as needed

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
• Knowledge and understanding of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems
• Ability to perform preventive maintenance and basic repairs on HVAC equipment, pumps, motors, and related systems
• Familiarity with air and water balancing principles
• Ability to support after-hours emergency response on a rotating basis
• Understanding of life safety systems, including fire panels, emergency power, and sprinkler systems
• Proficient in using CMMS systems for logging work orders and preventative maintenance
• Computer skills, familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical manuals, hazard material labels, and instructions.
• Ability to follow procedures, meet deadlines, and adhere to safety and security practices
• Strong numerical skills, including ability to perform basic math and compute percentages
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and apply problem-solving in standard situations
• Strong communication and customer service skills; able to interact professionally with customers and vendors.
• Works independently and as part of a team; able to mentor junior staff when needed

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
• High School Diploma or general education degree (GED)
• Minimum 3-5 years of commercial building engineering experience
• Strong proficiency in Building Management Systems (BMS)
o Experience with troubleshooting, monitoring, and optimizing HVAC systems through BMS
o Ability to navigate and interpret trends, alarms, and sequences of operations
• Basic electrical, basic refrigeration, and Universal CFC Certification recommended
• Appropriate License/permit for trade as may be required
