General Responsibilities

The Systems Engineering Department invites applications for a full-time tenure-track teaching faculty member at the Assistant Professor or Associate Professor level. This position supports the educational mission of the Academy and the Department within the School of Engineering to provide high-quality educational opportunities to our cadets. The curriculum includes applied engineering courses that focus on the engineering design of conventional, alternative, and renewable energy generation systems as well as power distribution, facility operations and management.

Note that there is no research or publication requirement for this position. We are seeking an energetic and enthusiastic individual who loves teaching and shares our dedication to excellence in undergraduate education.

General Responsibilities:

Teach an academic course load of 12 credits per semester in Department courses including Electrical Power Distribution, Energy Systems, and Energy Strategy and Management, as well as core engineering courses in Electronics and Electrical Machines with associated Labs, as needed
Responsible for undergraduate laboratory instruction and curricula, including design of the quality, efficacy, and learning outcomes of experiments
Advise, mentor, and guide cadets on individual plans of study and progress toward degree
Develop and teach new courses as needed, consistent with emerging industry demands and the academic goals of the Department
Participate in Department and Academy-wide academic committees to continuously improve MMA’s degree programs and support the academic mission of the Academy.

Qualifications and Requirements

Hold a PhD in Engineering, OR; Hold a Master of Science in Engineering and maintain a Professional Engineer license in any State, with capability of receiving a Massachusetts license within the first six months of employment, OR; Hold either a Master of Science in Engineering or a Professional Engineer license in any State and have the ability to obtain the other within 5 years.
Demonstrated teaching effectiveness and/or classroom innovation
Demonstrated ability in student mentoring and student development
Demonstrated commitment to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion in engineering
Have legal authorization to work in the United States by the proposed start date

Preferred Qualifications

Experience teaching the specific Department and core courses listed above in General Responsibilities
Relevant Systems Engineering or Engineering Management experience in the energy industry
Relevant professional work experience or industry experience
Demonstrated ability to teach multiple courses, and adapt to new topics
Excellent oral and written communication skills

Salary

$75,000-$84,000, based on education, qualifications and experience. Tenure-Track appointment at the Instructor, Assistant, or Associate level will be commensurate with prior fulltime teaching experience.

Massachusetts Maritime Academy (MMA), in partnership with Bollinger Shipyards and Finnish partners (Satakunta University of Applied Sciences, Rauma Marine Constructions, Länsirannikon Koulutus Oy WinNova) has been awarded funding for a four-year initiative NEXTSEAS, Next Era Xceptional Technology for Shipbuilding and Education in Americas’ Seas to create a future-ready, resilient shipbuilding workforce. This transatlantic collaboration will design and deliver an adaptive training pipeline that responds to the evolving needs of the US maritime industry.

The Shipbuilding Expert is a member MMA’s core grant team consisting of a Project Director, Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, and a Shipbuilding Expert who will partner with team members in Finland, Bollinger Shipyards, and other United States educational institutions.

Please note: This is a grant-funded position with no eligibility for severance pay. ILAB, the Federal awarding agency for this project, retains the authority to approve all key personnel changes throughout the life of the award as stated in 2 CFR 200.308(f).

Acknowledgement: Funding is provided by the United States Department of Labor under cooperative agreement number IL-26K75IL000030-01-00. 100% of the total costs of the project or program is financed with USG federal funds, for a total of 5,800,000.00 dollars.

Qualifications and Requirements

Demonstrated experience with ship production or a shipyard, with a primary focus on construction and delivery.
Demonstrated experience working with academic institutions, training centers, worker organizations, policymakers, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Navy, and other stakeholders.
Understanding of U.S. shipbuilding issues related to workers’ skillsets and industrial challenges.
Strong analytical and communications skills.
Fluency in English (written and spoken) required. Non-native speakers must provide evidence of fluency, including a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score or transcript showing completion of advanced English language coursework.

Salary

$75,000-$80,000 based on education, qualifications, and experience.
