Deckhand Job Summary (July - August 2025):
The Sailboat Deckhand is a key member of the crew responsible for assisting the Captain with all aspects of sailboat operation, basic maintenance, and guest experience. This is a hands-on role requiring physical fitness, attention to detail, and a willingness to work as part of a team in a dynamic environment.
Responsibilities:
Vessel Operations: Assist with sailing maneuvers, line handling (mooring protocol, tying vessel to docks or other vessels), handling fenders, and anchoring procedures.
Maintenance & Cleaning: Perform routine cleaning and maintenance tasks on the sailboat, including washing decks, and wooden fixtures & spars.
Guest Services: Assist guests with boarding and disembarking, ensuring their safety and comfort, and providing a positive and friendly presence onboard.
Safety Procedures: Participate in safety procedures and to ensure proper setup for each cruise, and maintain a safe environment for all on board.
Watchstanding: Participate in navigation watches, keeping a lookout for obstacles and maintaining the vessel's course, as well as GPS navigation systems.
Equipment Handling: Operate and maintain deck equipment, including winches and anchor windlass, and assist with tender operations.
Other Duties: May include performing other tasks as directed by the Captain.
Qualifications:
Previous experience working on boats or vessels is preferred.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact professionally with guests and crew.
Physical ability to perform tasks requiring manual labor, including lifting heavy objects, standing for extended periods, and maintaining balance on a moving deck.
Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including some weekends for July and August 2025.
Plan to sail 4-5 days weekly, generally for 3-4hrs per sail at $25/hrly.
Basic knowledge of navigation and equipment maintenance is beneficial.
Estimated Wages and Summer-end Bonus: $350 weekly for 8 weeks ($2,800 total) plus potential addition $500 performance bonus.
