Interstate Navigation Company (The Block Island Ferry) is seeking MATES for the ferry vessels for the 2026 summer season. Positions, are full time, seasonal (spring/ summer/ fall).

Interstate Navigation Company (The Block Island Ferry) operates traditional passenger/vehicle ferry vessels between Point Judith and Block Island, R.I. Interstate Navigation provides lifeline year-round ferry transportation of passengers, autos, commercial trucks, palletized freight, cargo and US Mail. Interstate also operates (2) high speed ferry vessels (passenger only), one from Point Judith, and one from Newport to Old Harbor, Block Island, RI.

The Block Island Ferry operates a 5-vessel fleet of USCG inspected Subchapter "K" passenger vessels. The ferry operates with a Master, Mate, and 5-7 deckhands, including single engineering watch stander that is responsible for machinery start-up/shutdown, onboard system monitoring and maintenance. The Captain, Mate, and deck crew report to and operate under the supervision of the Port Captain and Vessel Personnel Manager for the Block Island Ferry.

This is a safety sensitive marine transportation position. The MATE serves as second in command on the ferry, reporting directly to the captain. The MATE serves as the eyes and the ears of the captain, and provides a strong leadership role in coordinating all activities of the ferry crew, including: leading marine safety drills & training for fire, man overboard, abandon-ship, anchoring and general shipboard emergencies. The MATE is responsible for passenger safety, loading and unloading of passenger/vehicle ferry vessels, and general cleaning & maintenance.

Applicants for a MATE position must submit to USCG/DOT drug screening. Applicants must possess a valid TWIC card, and a valid USCG Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC), with an endorsement as Master upon Inland waters, up to 100 GRT. Must have excellent communications skills with a strong work ethic and be committed to exceptional customer service.
