Job Description
Position Summary
The Ship Superintendent is responsible for overseeing the daily execution of ship repair projects, ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with contract requirements and quality standards. This role coordinates labor, materials, and subcontractors while serving as the primary on-site leader and customer liaison.
Key Responsibilities
Serve as the primary on-site coordinator for assigned ship repair projects
Oversee daily activities of foremen, craft labor, and subcontractors to ensure work is completed on schedule and within scope
Interpret project specifications, drawings, and work orders, and communicate requirements clearly to the workforce
Partner with the COO to support project scheduling, progress tracking, and cost control efforts
Ensure all work is performed in compliance with OSHA regulations, company policies, and customer requirements
Conduct daily shipboard and yard inspections to monitor safety, quality, and production progress
Coordinate material, equipment, and resource needs with the Yard Superintendent and Purchasing team
Act as the primary point of contact for customers on-site, providing updates and resolving issues in a timely manner
Identify and document change conditions and assist in the preparation of change orders
Maintain accurate daily logs, including labor hours, work performed, safety observations, and operational challenges
Mentor and support supervisors and team members to drive performance and development
Assist with project closeout activities, including punch list completion and final documentation turnover
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture, or a related field preferred
Minimum of 5 years of experience in marine repair, shipyard operations, or a related engineering field
Proven experience supervising skilled trades and subcontractors in an industrial or shipyard environment
Strong ability to read and interpret technical drawings, specifications, and contracts
OSHA 30 Certification or equivalent safety training preferred
Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills
Experience with project management tools (e.g., MS Project, Primavera) or shipyard management systems preferred
Ability to work in a physically demanding environment, including climbing ladders, entering confined spaces, and working in varying weather conditions
Flexibility to work extended hours, weekends, or shifts as required to meet project demands
