Freshman Experiential Learning in Bermuda (MS-1311)
The experiential field course trains incoming MSSEP cadets in field methods and integrative problem solving related to ecological and environmental sciences at the world-class Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS). Students gain an understanding of the scientific method and apply modern scientific techniques in the field from hands-on experience in observing, collecting, and analyzing data through guided scientific excursions and laboratory work.
This 11-day field course includes a number of snorkeling excursions (SCUBA certification is not required), hikes throughout various habitats, and collecting and analyzing samples aboard BIOS boats. Lectures, readings and assignments will supplement the field work. Focus will be given to field methodology, organism identifications, geology, and human impact on marine and terrestrial ecosystems.

Hawaii Field Course: Geological Oceanography Field Experience (MS-3456)
The MSSEP Department created a new geological oceanography course based in beautiful Hawaii. Hawaii represents the most famous intraplate hotspot in the world, located in the center of the Pacific plate over 4,000 km away from a plate boundary. The Hawaiian hot spot has been supplying massive amounts of magma for over 80 million years resulting in a 6,200 km long string of Emperor seamounts and Hawaiian Islands. This two week geological oceanography field course explores Hawaii’s volcanoes, earthquakes, coastal environments, tropical climate and unique natural resources.
