This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career maritime professional to develop within the commercial tanker market while working alongside experienced chartering professionals.

The successful candidate will support the chartering team with market research, voyage analysis, vessel and cargo positioning, broker communications, and the development of customer and industry relationships. As the individual gains experience, the position will provide increasing exposure to commercial negotiations, voyage economics, and the full chartering process.

This role is designed for someone who already has some exposure to the commercial tanker industry but remains early enough in their career to be trained and developed within the company’s established approach to the market.

Ideal candidates will possess:

Bachelor’s degree from a maritime academy or another relevant university program; maritime academy graduates strongly preferred
Previous shoreside exposure to the commercial tanker market through chartering, vessel operations, shipbroking, freight analysis, demurrage, or a related function
Sea-going experience aboard tankers considered a strong plus
Understanding of tanker terminology, vessel operations, charter parties, and basic voyage economics
Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret market information and commercial data
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Confidence interacting with brokers, vessel operators, customers, and internal commercial teams
A collaborative, commercially curious, and highly motivated approach
Willingness to learn, accept coaching, and develop within an established chartering organization
Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced commercial environment
Current authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship

Vessel Operator – Houston, TX
Our client, an international tanker owner and operator, is seeking a Vessel Operator to join its commercial operations team in Houston. This individual will be responsible for the safe, efficient and commercially effective operation of assigned vessels, coordinating closely with shipboard personnel, charterers, technical managers, port agents, terminals and other stakeholders.

The Vessel Operator will manage voyages from fixture through completion, ensuring voyage instructions and charter-party requirements are properly communicated and executed.

Key responsibilities include:

Manage the daily commercial operation of assigned tanker vessels, reviewing charter parties and communicating voyage instructions to vessel Masters.
Monitor schedules, ETAs, notices of readiness and cargo operations while coordinating with charterers, terminals, agents and technical managers to minimize delays.
Appoint port agents, review disbursement accounts and support economical bunker planning, vessel routing, speed and fuel consumption.
Maintain complete and accurate voyage information in IMOS, including voyage costs, invoices, hire statements and month-end closing.
Prepare and review bills of lading, discharge orders, letters of indemnity, consumption records and other required voyage documentation.
Monitor vessel performance against charter-party warranties and address off-hire, overconsumption and other commercial issues.
Support third-party and time-chartered tonnage, including vessel screening, terminal questionnaires and ship-clearance requirements.
Help monitor vessel emissions and fuel-efficiency performance in accordance with regulatory and company requirements.
Ideal candidates will possess:

A bachelor’s degree in marine transportation, maritime business or another relevant discipline.
At least two years of commercial marine operations experience, preferably with a tanker owner or operator.
Previous sailing experience and/or a Third Mate’s license is preferred.
Working knowledge of tanker operations, charter parties, voyage management and contract administration.
Experience with IMOS or a comparable vessel-management system is preferred.
Strong communication, analytical, organizational and problem-solving skills.
The ability to manage multiple voyages and priorities in a fast-paced commercial environment.
Flexibility to provide occasional evening or weekend support and travel when required.
Must be currently authorized to work in the United States. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

Our client, a leading international energy and commodities organization, is seeking an experienced Senior Vessel Operator to join its Houston-based team. This position will be responsible for the commercial operation of spot and time-chartered tankers transporting crude oil and refined petroleum products.

The successful candidate will manage voyages from fixture through final settlement, working closely with traders, charterers, shipowners, brokers, agents, terminals and vessel personnel. This is a commercially focused position requiring strong tanker operations experience and direct financial responsibility for voyage performance.

Key Responsibilities
Manage the daily commercial operation of multiple spot and time-chartered tanker voyages.

Issue voyage instructions and ensure vessels comply with contractual and operational requirements.

Review and approve cargo stowage plans in coordination with vessel personnel and commercial stakeholders.

Appoint and coordinate port agents, inspectors, bunker suppliers and other service providers.

Monitor vessel schedules, port rotations, cargo operations, bunker consumption and voyage performance.

Ensure compliance with charter party terms, including laytime, demurrage and operational obligations.

Identify potential delays, operational issues and commercial exposure, taking proactive steps to protect the company’s interests.

Maintain accurate voyage records and provide timely updates to traders and internal stakeholders.

Review voyage expenses, approve invoices and support voyage accounting and final settlement.

Manage the financial performance of assigned voyages, including cost control and voyage P&L.

Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required; maritime academy education preferred.

Previous sailing experience aboard tankers is preferred.

Eight to ten or more years of commercial tanker operations experience.

Demonstrated experience managing crude oil and/or refined product tanker voyages.

Previous responsibility for voyage economics, cost management and financial performance.

Strong understanding of charter parties, laytime, demurrage, bunkering and port operations.

Effective communicator with the ability to interact professionally with traders, shipboard officers, owners, brokers, agents, terminals and other service providers.

Able to manage multiple voyages and competing priorities in a fast-paced commercial environment.

Self-motivated and comfortable working within a small team with limited supervision.
