The Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS) is accepting applications for Port Engineer for the oceanographic research vessel Atlantic Explorer. The R/V Atlantic Explorer is part of the Academic Research Fleet (ARF) with operational funding from the U.S. National Science Foundation. Candidates should have an appreciation for science and an interest in a non-commercial maritime career within the academic and research community. This position is responsible for overseeing the maintenance, servicing, repairing, and/or replacement of marine power plants, propulsion systems, machinery along with all heating, ventilating, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and other mechanical subsystems extant on vessel.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the day-to-day, technical operability of the R/V Atlantic Explorer and shore-based engineering support facilities.

DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES (include but not limited to):

• Manage the planned maintenance of engine room’s machinery and equipment aboard vessel including supervising and coordinating vessel maintenance and repairs to ensure timely completion.
• Ensure that all machinery and equipment are maintained up to required standards and that all necessary records/documentations are up to date.
• Assess the maintenance needs of the vessel as per manufacturer’s requirements, class requirements, and equipment and machinery’s present condition, and accordingly identify the
maintenance work and resources required.
• Assist in the planning and execution of scheduled maintenance and major overhaul events such as dry dockings and wet dockings of vessel as well as in all emergency situations necessitating such action, including specification preparation, equipment procurement, budgeting, and record keeping.
• Arrange and manage repairs conducted by shore-based personnel and vendors on board the vessel.
• Physically assist all repair teams including engineering crew and sub-contractors in servicing, troubleshooting, repairing, and/or replacing equipment, machinery, and other components when vessel is in port at BIOS or elsewhere (i.e., be “hands on” and get “dirty”).
• Investigate the causes of mechanical, equipment, or power system failures to determine the causes of these failures and recommend mitigating actions.
• Assist in the investigation of major incidents and lead the investigation team where appropriate.
• Monitor the implementation of the shipboard maintenance plan and SMS manual.
• Perform inspections and ensure vessel documentation and certifications are up to date and that vessel meets the classification society and flag state requirements.
• Ensure vessel meets regulatory requirements and maintains documentation on an ongoing basis including the preparation and safeguarding of maintenance records and documents for the flag state and classification society.
• Authorize vessels’ acquisition requests and ensure timely delivery of spare parts.
• Ensure proper handover between incoming and outgoing Chief Engineers.
• Assist in the familiarization & briefing of incoming engineering crew.
• Assist in the continual development of the fleet technical policies, standard operating procedures, and safe working procedures.
• Serve as office contact for issues with shipboard maintenance and repair systems involving HELM Connect.
• Create purchase orders and track expenses in the ship and shore side service accounts and provide input to the budget process.
• Provide updates to staff on regulatory requirements influencing maritime operations and BIOS.
• Provide on-site shipyard supervision as scheduled by Marine Superintendent.
• Serve as a relief engineer for the Chief Engineers when and where needed.
• Perform miscellaneous tasks as assigned by Marine Superintendent.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• U.S. Coast Guard License as either Third Assistant Engineer Unlimited of Motor Vessels or Assistant Engineer-Limited of Motor Vessels or Designated Duty Engineer Unlimited of Motor Vessels combined with the requisite STCW endorsement(s) corresponding to the national license(s) held.
• U.S. Coast Guard Medical Certificate.
• Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC) card.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

• Good working knowledge of oceanographic research vessels, or comparable, specialized vessels such as seismic ships, cable laying ships, dive boats, or workboats in general, and U.S. Coast Guard regulations.
• Experience sailing as an engineering officer on an oceanographic research vessel, or workboat of comparable size and power to the R/V Atlantic Explorer (171’ LOA, 299 GRT/861 ITC, 1880 HP/1402 kW), or equivalent experience in the marine industry with significant supervisory and budgetary responsibilities.
• Travel may be required; occasionally for up to 3+ months during a regulatory drydock.
• Experience in preparation and execution of shipyard visits, including knowledge and experience with American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) requirements.
• College degree or equivalent in marine engineering, other engineering subject, or allied field.
• Extensive crisis management skills, and ability to work well under pressure and to act quickly and decisively.
• Demonstrates a successful track record in vessel maintenance and ship repair activities.
• Applicants must be able to work effectively and respectfully with a diverse complement of crew, technicians, faculty, students, and scientists from around the world and be able to work in a remote research environment.
• Computer literacy, proven organizational skills, excellent communication skills, understanding of hand signals and ability to multi-task required.

The R/V Atlantic Explorer is part of the Academic Research Fleet (ARF) with operational funding from the U.S. National Science Foundation. Candidates should have an appreciation for science and an interest in a non-commercial maritime career within the academic and research community. The successful candidate will direct all shipboard engineering activities of the R/V Atlantic Explorer while on watch and accept full responsibility for the proper operation of all shipboard systems. Additionally, the Chief Engineer will work closely with the Port Captain, Port Engineer, and Lead Marine Technician.

DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES (include but not limited to):

• Overseeing the maintenance and operation of select deck and safety equipment, cargo handling gear, all machinery as well as all engineering-related components, equipment, gear, and tools.
• Effectively maintaining, operating, and/or supervising all engineering-related aspects of the R/V Atlantic Explorer such as operating the ship’s crane, A-Frames, trawl winches, instrument winches, and CTD winch as necessary to accomplish each specific scientific operation in a safe and efficient manner.
• Actively participating in the servicing, repair or replacement of engineering-related systems and machinery on the R/V Atlantic Explorer and interfacing directly with the vessel’s Master for repairs on equipment deemed critical to the safe navigation or operation of the vessel.
• Actively participating in all scheduled and impromptu shipyard periods, drydocking events, and other unplanned maintenance events by preparing the vessel when such events arise, assisting shipyard workers, service technicians, equipment representatives, and external maintenance personnel in such situations, and assisting and supervising the vessel’s engineering crew in such circumstances.
• Assuming overall responsibility for cleanliness and organization of engine-room and other machinery spaces.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Minimum two years’ experience sailing as an engineering officer on research vessels, or workboats of comparable size and power to the R/V Atlantic Explorer (171’ LOA, 299 GRT/861 ITC, 1880 HP/1402 kW), or equivalent experience in the marine industry with significant supervisory and budgetary responsibilities.
• U.S. Coast Guard License as either Third Assistant Engineer Unlimited of Motor Vessels or Assistant Engineer-Limited of Motor Vessels or Designated Duty Engineer Unlimited of Motor Vessels combined with the requisite STCW endorsement(s) corresponding to the national license(s) held.
• Equivalent foreign engineering license(s) combined with requisite STCW endorsement(s) are acceptable.
• College degree or equivalent training in marine engineering, other engineering subject, or allied field.
