Available Chief Mate position onboard the University of Hawaii Research Vessel Kilo Moana, typical rotation is 90 days on/off. The vessel is homeported in Honolulu and primarily operates in the eastern Pacifica and near the Hawaiian islands.

The Chief Mate performs duties such as managing vessel operations and safety, directing logistics for upcoming science expeditions, managing shipboard personnel and administration, overseeing voyage planning, vessel maintenance, and conducting drills and inspects to ensure crew preparedness. The Chief Mate also stands a navigation watch.

Travel expensed are covered by us. The science work conducted aboard Kilo Moana is world class and exciting at times not to mention the stewards department puts out great meals.

This is a sea-going ship’s crew position, and will be assigned to R/V KILO MOANA, a 186” SWATH (twin-hull) research vessel operated by the University of Hawai‘i Marine Center (UHMC). The Master and other vessel crew work on a rotational schedule (e.g., three (3) months on, three (3) months off), based on operational needs of the program. Variations in rotational schedule may be required and/or approved at the discretion of the UHMC Marine Operations Superintendent. Supervises the daily work of up to nineteen (19) licensed and unlicensed vessel crew. The ship's Master is in overall command of all personnel (crew and scientist) and operations aboard the vessel. The Master is responsible for managing the safety, seaworthiness, security, regulatory/class items, and readiness/effectiveness of the research vessel. Performs under long-range administrative delegation, reporting directly to the Marine Operations Superintendent at UHMC.

Kilo Moana is a research vessel conducting oceanographic operations around the Hawaiian Archipelago and the greater Pacific Ocean. The ship has WiFi and a gym onboard that the crew can access. The food on the ship is really good.

Immediate Opening - 3rd Assistant positions available aboard R/V Kilo Moana (KM), a 186′ SWATH (Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull) vessel conducting oceanographic research operations for the University of Hawaii.

3rd Assistant Engineer: Under supervision as delegated from the Chief Engineer to the First Assistant Engineer, serves as an assistant in assigned matters pertaining to engineering and administration of the Engineering Department. Serves as Officer in Charge of an Engineering Watch (OICEW), supervising the daily work of junior Engineering Department personnel sharing the same watch schedule. The Third Engineer is responsible for the operation of all engine room machinery while on duty and is expected to maintain clean engineering spaces, complete all routine service, effect minor repair work and adjustments as necessary, and ensure that safety and legal requirements are adhered to. Responsible for auxiliary engine room machinery.
Performs all other duties as directed by the Chief Engineer or First Assistant Engineer. Employee will work on a rotational schedule based on operational needs.
