Massachusetts Maritime Academy to Welcome Training Ship Patriot State, Friday, October 11

BUZZARDS BAY, MA, ISSUED OCTOBER 9, 2024…Media representatives are invited to join the Massachusetts Maritime Academy community as it welcomes the arrival of the Training Ship Patriot State to the Academy’s campus on Friday, October 11, at 2 p.m. at Massachusetts Maritime Academy, 101 Academy Drive, Buzzards Bay.

The arrival coincides with the Academy’s hosting of the International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU) annual conference, where more than 200 representatives from maritime universities around the world will be in attendance.  Maritime Administrator Rear Admiral Ann Phillips will be on campus to officially sign the ship over to the Academy and to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Additionally, U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren, U.S. Congressman Bill Keating, and other federal, state, and local legislators are also expected to attend.

The National Security Multi-Mission Vessel (NSMV) is designed to provide a state-of-the-art training platform that ensures the U.S. continues to set the world standard in maritime training. The ship is outfitted with numerous training spaces, including eight classrooms, a full training bridge, lab spaces and an auditorium. The NSMV has space to train up to 600 cadets at sea, maximizing the capability of the ship and its mission to provide cadets with a world-class education.

Recently, the ship was handed over from Philly Shipyard, which completed construction of the ship, to the Maritime Administration (MARAD).  At the Academy, the TS Patriot State will replace the former training ship TS Kennedy, a 1967 converted cargo ship.  This is the second of five training ships the Philly Shipyard has been commissioned to build; the first, TS Empire State, was delivered to SUNY Maritime College in New York last fall, as part of MARAD’s program to address an aging training fleet by commissioning new, purpose-built NSMVs that enhance the nation's maritime academies' training capabilities and serve as critical support assets for the federal government in times of need.  Each ship is being built to meet the highest current and future environmental standards.

The Patriot State is 525 feet (160.05 meters) long, has a depth of 55’1” (16.8 meters) deep, and has a range of 10,000+ miles at 18 knots.  It has diesel electric propulsion with 16,800 kW of total installed power plus a 900 kW emergency generator.  Full speed is 18 knots.
