The Marine Mechanic performs highly skilled mechanical, and systems work across the Academy’s small craft fleet. This position involves direct supervision of students in technical and operational settings and represents the Academy in public-facing roles. The Marine Mechanic ensures vessel readiness, safety, and compliance through expert maintenance, repair, and instructional engagement.
DUTIES
Fleet Maintenance & Repair
• Perform diagnostics, maintenance, and repairs on marine engines (inboard and outboard), propulsion systems, and auxiliary equipment.
• Install, troubleshoot, and maintain electrical and electronic systems on Academy vessels.
• Coordinate and execute mechanical repairs across the fleet, including safety inspections and documentation.

Student Instruction & Supervision
• Train and supervise students in marine mechanical techniques, safety protocols, and hands-on vessel operations.
• Teach in lab settings and mentor student workers in shop and field environments.

Operational Support
• Serve as crew member aboard Academy vessels as required.
• Operate and maintain cranes, travel lifts, pumps, vehicles, and other support equipment.
• Maintain preventive maintenance records and logs for vessels and equipment.

Shop & Facility Oversight
• Ensure safety, cleanliness, and organization of shop areas and workspaces.
• Support mooring maintenance and assist with rigging and seasonal vessel preparations.

Additional Duties
• Participate in vessel painting and coating applications.
• Lift heavy items, climb masts, and work in physically demanding environments.
• Comply with Academy safety policies, including use of protective equipment and drug testing protocols.

SKILLS
• Basic understanding of diesel fuel systems
• Ability to troubleshoot DC electrical systems with a multimeter
• Ability to weld and fabricate various metals
• Ability to service and diagnose marine outboard engines, or willingness to obtain training.
• Understanding of basic hydraulic systems and fittings
• Ability to document and maintain maintenance records
• Basic computer skills

QUALIFICATIONS
• High School diploma/GED.
• Valid Maine driver's license required.
• Proven knowledge of the safe operation and maintenance of a variety of hand, power and shop tools used in a variety of trade areas.
• Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written forms, ability to use e-mail.
• Must be self-motivated and hardworking.
• Must be able to get along well with others.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
• Criminal Background check is required. MMA reserves the right to make employment contingent upon successful completion of Background Check.
• May have to pass an aptitude test dependent upon trade.
• May also have to pass a DOT physical and be required to pass random drug screenings.
• May enter confined spaces and be required to wear respiratory gear. A fit test is required.

• Must obtain OSH 30 certification within (6) months of employment.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Strength and mobility to work in a typical field or shop maintenance setting, including operating hand and power tools; stamina to perform sustained physical labor, including standing, walking, climbing and working in confined or awkward spaces; strength to lift and maneuver materials and equipment weighing up to 100 pounds with proper equipment; vision to read printed materials; and hearing and speech to communicate in person or over a radio or telephone.

• Exposure to extreme weather conditions, noise, electrical shocks, hazardous chemicals, electrical currents, gases, dust and noxious odors.
• Work from ladders, heights, scaffolds, lifts, etc.
• Work in closed restricted locations.
• Work requiring full time and overtime hours outdoors in all types of weather.
• On-call work: nights, weekends, holidays.
• Ability to traverse campus and move up and down hills, ladders, gangways etc.
• Lift a minimum of 50 pounds on a regular basis.
• Grasp and manipulate small and large tools, equipment and controls.
