Summary
Support of dredging operations and related work; all other work as required.

Supervision
Works under the general direction of the Dredge Superintendent, receives oral instructions
concerning specific projects and general suggestions on assignments. Judgments associated with
major equipment faults are referred to supervisor.
Performs varied and responsible duties, requiring judgment in conducting routine dredging work.

Essential Functions
The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various

Works with other members of the dredge crew to properly complete all phases of dredging operations.
Provides routine maintenance; monitors equipment to ensure it is operational to avoid down-time and
loss of production.
Assists with moving the dredge, repositioning anchors, and pipeline; assists in moving the dredge
between work sites.
Involved with handling small boats/skiffs and associated anchor movement related to dredge
activities.
If licensed, may operate a front-end loader, skid steer and or excavator.

Performs similar or other related work as required, directed or as situations dictates.

Recommended Minimum Qualifications
* Must have a valid Driver s License, and reliable transportation to and from the job site.
* Must be able to travel and work a rotating schedule.
* Must be able to work on Saturdays during the dredge season (September to June) if needed.
* Must be able to tolerate rough seas, windy conditions, cold and hot temperations, vibrations,
heat, confined spaces, and high noise levels.

Education and Experience
High school education and 2 to 4 years’ experience working in a marine environment. Preference is
given to applicants that have experience operating work skiffs and outboards with tiller shifts.
Must be able to pass a post offer physical exam.

Knowledge
Knowledge of basic marine equipment maintenance and repair.

Ability
Ability to work in difficult weather conditions, working with marine equipment and managing
projects with safety. Ability to carry out defined plans and tasks. Ability to work in a marine
environment.
Ability to drive a pick-up truck with a boat trailer; backing, launching and hauling out a skiff
onto a trailer.

Skill
Mechanical aptitude; skill at maintaining equipment.
Required Licensing/Certification:
Ability to acquire a hydraulic license (Class 1B).
Ability to work in difficult weather conditions and for long periods of time.

Job Environment
Work is performed outdoors, with risk of exposure to loud noise and with exposure to outdoor
weather conditions (rain, fog, wind), extremes of temperature, and risks associated with water,
rivers and bays, as well as exposure to dangerous equipment. Risk of injury from occupational
hazards of heavy equipment, hydraulics and the marine environment.

Work fluctuates seasonally; the dredge season normally runs from October to June; depending on the
project, days in excess of 8 hours is common as well as on Saturday's to achieve the departments
goals.

Operates hand tools, power tools, pneumatic tools, light trucks, light equipment. Uses equipment
such as torches, overhead hoists, navigational equipment, pumps, skiff with outboard motor, lines,
and winches and other related equipment.

Rare contact with the public.

Errors in performing responsibilities could result in personal injury, injury to others, damages to
equipment, and delay or loss of service.

The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to

Strenuous physical effort required to perform duties under all weather conditions. Required to
walk, sit and stand for long periods of time and reach with arms. Frequently required to lift more
than 30 pounds and occasionally required to lift more than 100 pounds and shift or position anchors
which weigh 150, 300 and 500 pounds.
