General Responsibilities

Incumbents of positions in this series install heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment including related fixtures. Checks heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment for malfunctions and maintains and repairs equipment. Performs related work such as assembling metal ducts, structural components, shelves, cabinet systems and functional components of heating, air conditioning and refrigeration systems. Order supplies and equipment and performs related duties as required. This position is designated “ESSENTIAL PERSONNEL” to respond to work for emergency situations.

Qualifications and Requirements

Applicants must possess the ability to communicate in an oral and written manner. Applicants must possess physical stamina and endurance including the ability to lift and carry heavy objects, stand or walk for extended periods of time, and climb and work from ladders. Based on assignment, applicants may be required to operate a motor vehicle and therefore must possess a valid Massachusetts Class 3 Motor Vehicle Operator’s license. Applicants must have at least two years of full-time or equivalent part-time technical experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of heating, refrigeration, ventilating and air conditioning systems, or any equivalent combination of the required experience and substitutions below. Substitutions: A certificate or diploma from a recognized institution above the high school level, as evidence of completion of a two year program in refrigeration and heating, may be substituted for one year of the required experience. EPA Section 608 Universal Technician Certification. Education toward such a certificate or diploma will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.

Salary

Grade 17/Step 4 bi-weekly $2,404.09; Annually $62,506.34. The Academy offers generous benefits.
