Emergency Management & Homeland Security FacultyGeneral Responsibilities
- Ability to teach an academic course load of 12 credits per semester (Fall and Spring) of college-level courses within the Emergency Management Department. Teaching responsibilities would primarily include Emergency Management and Homeland Security topic areas, along with related departmental courses as needed. The department’s curriculum may be viewed on the Massachusetts Maritime Academy’s website.
- Regular curriculum development and improvement.
- Participation in various academic committees in support of the Department and Academy.
- Participation in Emergency Management Department Experiential Learning Programs, teaching and supervising students in an off-campus, residential setting. Participation involves traveling and residing away from the faculty member’s domicile.
- Serving as an academic advisor to assigned student advisees.
- All teaching positions at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy require computer literacy, excellent written and oral communication skills, and an understanding of the Academy's unique mission.
Qualifications and Requirements
The Academy is seeking candidates for one full-time faculty position. Based on the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate, the position may be filled as either a tenure-track or non-tenure-track appointment, as follows:
Full-Time, Tenure Track Position: For a full-time, tenure-track position, candidates must have a Doctorate in Emergency Management or related field (including public health, public administration or law) by Fall 2027 and be able to teach in one or more of the following areas: Emergency Management Policy, Procedure, and Theory, Environmental/ Occupational Health and Safety, Cybersecurity, Exercise Design and Development, Emergency Planning, Emergency Management Communications, GIS and/or Emergency Management related Information Technology courses, and related subject areas.
Full-Time, non-Tenure Track Position: Candidates with a master’s degree and relevant field experience are encouraged to apply and may be considered for a Full-Time Temporary Faculty position for the 2027-2028 Academic Year (September 2027 - June 2028). This is a one-year, benefited, non-tenure-track position with potential for renewal.
In addition, all candidates must have the following qualifications:
- Demonstrated potential to fulfill evaluation criteria for teaching and advising at the college level.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, and computer skills. Understanding and appreciation of the Academy's unique mission.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional licenses/certifications related to Emergency Management (e.g. CEM or AEM), National & Homeland Security, and/ or Environmental/ Occupational Health and Safety
- Record of relevant academic research and writing
