General Statement of Duties:  Duties include regular police patrols of campus grounds, buildings, and adjacent areas on foot or in a patrol vehicle to protect physical property, ensure community safety, deter crime and prevent theft or vandalism; respond to calls for service, complaints, medical and other emergencies and initiate action as needed; conduct searches, mediate disputes, and ensures compliance with all local and state laws, rules, and regulations; prepare incident reports and maintain dispatch logs; enforce all traffic requirements and parking regulations. Perform security details at campus functions and special events as assigned. Provide transportation services including personal safety escorts and other transportation duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Eligibility for appointment as a Massachusetts Special State Police Officer under Massachusetts General Law, Chapter 22C, Section 63 and must obtain Special State Police Powers from the Massachusetts State Police without additional training
  • Graduate of full time Municipal Police Academy Training certified and approved by the Municipal Police Training Committee (MPTC) (or equivalent, as determined by the Chief of Police and MPTC/POST)
  • Candidates MUST be a certified police officer in Massachusetts per MPTC/POST standards
  • Must possess or have the ability to obtain and maintain a Class A license to carry firearm (M.G.L.c.140, section 131). (Without restrictions)
  • Must have and maintain a valid Massachusetts Driver's License.CPR/AED/First Responder certification; current and valid 
  • Must be able to pass the following pre-employment examinations:  drug screening, physical and psychological assessments as well as a thorough background check to include Criminal Offender Records Information

Must possess excellent written and oral communication skill

Requirements to Maintain Appointment:

  • All Mass Maritime Academy sworn officers will be required to obtain/maintain their certification through POST and our agency shall not employ a decertified officer in any capacity in accordance with MGL c6E s4(g) which states; "No agency shall appoint or employ a person as a law enforcement officer unless the person is certified by the commission."
  • Annual in service trainings will be required.
  • Specialized training will be required.
  • A failure to maintain a license to carry a firearm and/or a valid driver's license will subject officers to dismissal.
  • Officers whose police appointment applications are pending will be assigned duties that do not require police authority.

Salary

Biweekly: $2,299.48 (Grade 16/Step 6) Annual: $59,786.48 (Grade 16/Step 6)
