Today, I am excited to share, The Treasure Of Pirate Frank by Mal Pete and Elspeth Graham.
As you know, there’s no better place to read a good book than curled up in Captain Campbell’s chair on the Bridge. That’s where I ran into Cadet Chief Mate Michael Clapp. I think you might remember me introducing him to you at the start of Sea Term 2023. He is from Metairie, Louisiana. In his leadership role, Michael is always on the go. He welcomed the opportunity take a short break and read The Treasure Of Pirate Frank.

In the Mess Deck, I met a new friend who read The Treasure Of Pirate Frank while she finished up her dinner.
Let look at four key vocabulary words included in our story.
sea:
A sea portion of the ocean that is partly surrounded by land. There are about 50 seas around the world.
Connection To Our Book: The boy who is searching for Pirate Frank’s treasure sails his ship through the sea.
Connection To Sea Term 2023: Today, the TS Kennedy is cruising in the Caribbean Sea on her way to Aruba.

island:
An island is a body of land surrounded by water. There are 100 inhabited islands in the Caribbean.
Connection To Our Book: The boy searched for treasure on an island.
Connection To Sea Term 2023: Tomorrow, the TS Kennedy will dock in Aruba, an island in the Caribbean Sea.

mountain:
A mountain is a natural rise of the Earth’s surface, usually with a summit. It is steeper and taller than a hill.
Connection To Our Book: The boy hiked over mountains snowy and cold. Pico Duarte is the highest mountain in the Caribbean. It is on the island of Hispaniola. That is the only location where it snows in the Caribbean. It is pictured below.
Connection To Sea Term 2023: Jamanota, the highest point in Aruba, is not a mountain. It is considered a hill.

volcano:
A volcano is an opening in the Earth's crust through which lava, volcanic ash, and gases escape. The Soufrière Hills Volcano is the only volcano currently erupting in the Eastern Caribbean. It is located on the island of Montserrat.
Connection To Our Book: The boy walked past a volcano spitting out fire.
Connection To Sea Term 2023: Aruba is a volcanic island. It was formed when a volcano erupted on the floor of the ocean. Hooiberg is a 541-foot-high volcanic formation on the island of Aruba. It is located almost in the center of the island. Cadets will be able to spot Hooiberg from virtually anywhere on the island. It is pictured below.
