Meet 4/C Austin Chavero, a Marine Engineering major from Framingham, Massachusetts. He attended Israel Loring Elementary School, Ephraim Curtis Middle School, and Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School.
As a toddler, Austin’s favorite book was Hooray for Fish by Lucy Cousins. He was captivated each time Little Fish took him on a mesmerizing underwater tour, introducing his spotty, stripy, happy, gripy, hairy, scary, curly whirly, and twisty twirly friends. Repeated readings of the book led to his fascination with fish, aquariums, pirates, and the ocean.
Austin discovered Massachusetts Maritime Academy thanks to Luigi Polizio, a Class Of 2022 MMA grad. When Luigi shared videos of his experiences at sea, Austin was intrigued and wanted to know more.
During the summer of 2021, Austin participated in the Academy’s Sea, Science, and Leadership Program and got a jump-start on campus life. The mission of the Sea, Science and Leadership Program (SSLP) is to provide high school students with interactive, educational workshops that build confidence, challenge decision-making skills that develop and strengthen leadership qualities. The program also prepares participants for the college admissions process, fosters lifelong friendships, and introduces the many career opportunities that Massachusetts Maritime Academy offers. Austin quickly realized that MMA was the perfect fit for him.
Austin is looking forward to experiencing all that Sea Term 2023 has to offer.
Our youngest followers will enjoy listening to a reading of Cadet Chavero's favorite childhood book, Hooray For Fish by Lucy Cousins.
