Students with a High School GPA less than 3.0

Your High School GPA of less than 3.0  indicates that there may be gaps in your quantitative reasoning skills, and that you need to do some preparatory work to help ensure your success at MMA. You are strongly urged to complete the Intermediate Algebra course this summer at MMA.  An on-line Intermediate Algebra course at any other institution course does not fulfill this requirement and will not be accepted. If you are unable to enroll in the MMA course, we strongly recommend that you enroll in the online ALEKS program, entitled “MMA Summer Prep for Algebra/Trig 2020.”  The ALEKS program will open on June 20, 2020, and the deadline for completion is July 30, 2020 at 11:59 pm EDT.  The deadline for completion cannot be extended.  For those who successfully complete their ALEKS program, there will be final assessment given on July 31, 2020.

Students who do not complete ALEKS (including successful completion of a final assessment given upon completion of ALEKS) or who do not successfully complete the MMA Intermediate Algebra course will be limited to 4 academic courses during the Fall semester, and will be enrolled in a co-requisite Math course.

ALEKS is a self-paced computer tutorial program, intended for highly motivated, self-directed students. It is intended to be completed without assistance of any kind.  No friends, family, tutors, or on-line assistance.  ALEKS will provide an on-screen calculator when one is allowed (otherwise, personal calculator use is NOT allowed at any time on ALEKS). It has been designed to meet the needs of students entering Algebra/Trig at MMA.  Participation in the ALEKS tutorial program is voluntary.  It does not lead to any course advancement, nor does it provide course credit.  What it does provide is help with the math skills needed for success in Algebra/Trig.

The ALEKS course is designed with 148 topics, each of which is essential prerequisite knowledge for Algebra/Trig.

You are allowed unlimited hours to complete the ALEKS program.  However, the subscription you purchase is for a 6-week program.

The ALEKS program will open on June 20, 2020 and will end on July 30, 2020 at 11:59 pm EDT.  The program will be disabled at that time.  The deadline will not be extended.

If you choose this option, you must show mastery of all 148 topics, successfully complete the “Class Completion Knowledge Check,” AND successfully complete the final assessment given after completion of the ALEKS program.

For those who successfully complete their ALEKS program, there will be final assessment given on July 31, 2020.  Instructions on how to access the final assessment will be sent to your ALEKS message center after you complete your ALEKS program. To maintain test security and integrity, a lockdown browser and webcam are required for the final assessment.   Please see this link for system requirements, and installation instructions, for the lockdown browser on ALEKS:   IMPORTANT:  the lockdown browser does not work with a Chromebook.  Students must take a practice quiz (available under "Assignments") before completion of ALEKS to ensure that the lockdown browser and webcam monitor have been properly installed.  Note: there may be a one-time $10 fee, when installing the webcam security program.

  • Reminder: ALEKS is to be done without assistance.  No tutors, math coaches, friends, family, notes or on-line resources.  A personal calculator may NOT be used.
  • Note: For best results, use a web browser such as Firefox, Chrome or Edge.  It is not compatible with Internet Explorer.

All communication between the instructor and the student is through the ALEKS message center (see the envelop icon on the top right of your ALEKS home page).  It is recommended that you set the ALEKS program to have all e-mails from me sent as a read-only copy to your regular e-mail account, in addition to your message center.  Go to the top right of your ALEKS home screen.  Click on your name.  Go to “settings.”  Move the toggle switch to “Forward ALEKS messages to my e-mail address.”  All e-mails to the instructor must be done through the ALEKS message center, not your personal e-mail.
