Accounts and Equipment
Within 10-14 business days after you've been accepted to Massachusetts Maritime Academy, you will receive an email from the Maritime Service Desk (servicedesk@maritime.edu) with your account information. At that time, you will also receive an @maritime.edu email address which will be used as the primary email for correspondence from the Academy.
Step 1: Create your My Maritime password
- Visit My Maritime
- Login with your assigned My Maritime username and temporary password. This is sent to you in an email from servicedesk@maritime.edu. Your username will include @maritime.edu. "My Maritime username" + @maritime.edu (ex: john.doe@maritime.edu)
- Follow the prompts and change your My Maritime password. You must memorize this password, as it will be needed at Freshman Orientation. Please set your password to something you will easily remember!!
Password requirements:- Must be at least 8 characters long
- Must contain 3 out of 4 of the following: uppercase, lowercase, number and/or character
- CANNOT use your first or last name in the password
- Going forward, you will be prompted to change your password every 180 days for security reasons.
Step 2: Activate your Maritime Email Account
All students receive a Maritime email address, which is your connection to the Academy. This account is used as the primary means of communication from Academy administrators and faculty. Check your email account regularly for updates and information. To activate your email account:
- Go to https://mail.google.com/a/maritime.edu.
- Log in with your full email address, which is your username, first.last@maritime.edu.
- Your password is your My Maritime password.
All students have unlimited storage in Gmail and Google Drive. To open Drive, click on the icon of 9 dots in the upper right corner and select Drive.
Step 3: Review Computer Equipment Requirements
Massachusetts Maritime Academy requires all cadets to have a laptop computer, tablet, or other personal computing device. Devices may be purchased through the Academy Bookstore or other retail outlets. Please ensure that any new device meets or exceeds the following minimum hardware and software requirements.
Operating System
- Windows 11
- macOS 15.2 or later
- Linux: Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or newer (or equivalent variants)
Please note: Devices running Chrome OS are not recommended, as Chrome OS is not compatible with the test-proctoring software used by the Academy.
Hardware
- Processor: Modern multi-core CPU (Intel i5 / AMD Ryzen 5 / Apple M-series or better recommended)
- Memory (RAM): 16 GB recommended (8 GB minimum)
- Storage: 256 GB SSD minimum (512 GB recommended)
- Wireless Adapter: Built-in Wi-Fi required
Warranty & Protection
- Warranty: 3+ years recommended
- On-site, next-business-day service preferred
- Accidental damage coverage strongly recommended
Software & Security
- Antivirus software with automatic updates and active scanning is required (including Windows, macOS, and Linux systems)
Networking
- For wired connections: 25-foot Category 5e or Category 6 Ethernet cable recommended
Printing
- Personal desktop printers are discouraged
- Network printers are available across campus
Wireless Policy
MMA policy prohibits personal wireless access points (routers, extenders, hotspots) in the dormitories. Personal access points interfere with campus wireless service and create security vulnerabilities.
Microsoft Office
Cadets are eligible for a free downloadable copy of Microsoft Office through Microsoft’s Education program.
Access is available using your MMA email account.

To create a Service Desk ticket or search through the Knowledge Base for solutions, go to Service Desk Support. Your username/password is your My Maritime username and password.
