Trans Inclusion Policy

The Academy strives to create an inclusive environment for all students including its trans affiliates.  Each of us has a responsibility to treat others with dignity and respect.  This commitment to dignity and respect always will be a keystone value and must guide our treatment of one another.  The Academy's Trans Inclusion policy begins with its Non-Discrimination Policy:

Massachusetts Maritime Academy is committed to a policy of non-discrimination, equal opportunity, diversity and affirmative action. Campus Housing

Students will be assigned berthing (dorm rooms) correlating to the gender indicated in the Massachusetts Maritime Academy Student Information System (i.e. Colleague).  Modification requests can be made to the Office of the Commandant and can be requested at any time once the student is on campus, or the notification can be made to the Admissions Department during the application process.  If you are a trans student who has specific access needs, please contact Title IX Coordinator Mrs. Elizabeth Benway, in the Human Resources Office, at or 508.830.5086 or the Commandant’s Office at or 508.830.5047.


Several gender-neutral restrooms are available in the student dorms. Two of the restrooms are located on the first floor of the First Company dorm. On the second, third, and fourth floors of the dorms, there is a gender-neutral restroom located next to the elevator.

Healthcare for MMA Students

MMA provides medical care and counseling through Health Services located on the main deck of 4th Company and the Counseling Center located on the main deck of 3rd Company.  These services include primary care, urgent care, occupational health, men's and women's health, STI testing (directly or through campus visits from Wareham Family Planning), and individual counseling sessions. Health Services cares for all students in a professional, friendly, and private environment. We recognize that transgender students are sometimes hesitant to access health care, so we work hard to create a supportive environment where students can ask questions, get answers, and experience compassionate physical and mental health care.

Alumni Gym Usage

If you are a trans student, staff, faculty, or alumni member who has specific access needs to use the Alumni Gym, contact Mike Kelley, Director of Athletics, at 508.830.5055 or Athletics staff have identified a single-user, gender neutral restroom, changing room, and shower facility that you may use if desired.


Massachusetts Maritime Academy Athletics and the NCAA are committed to inclusion and gender equity among its student-athletes, coaches and administrators.  Participation in intercollegiate athletics is a valuable part of the educational experience for all students at the Academy.  Trans student-athletes will have an equal opportunity to participate in sports.  If you are a trans student who plans on participating in athletics, to avoid challenges to your participation it is suggested that you contact the Mike Kelley, Director of Athletics, at 508.830.5055 prior to your enrollment.
