Diesel Locomotive Mechanic – Canaan, CT
The Locomotive Mechanic is responsible for the periodic inspection and routine maintenance and repair of diesel electric locomotives and other mechanical systems including but not limited to motors, brakes, couplers, control components and electrical components on all owned Railroad equipment. Responsibility also extends to the restoration, refurbishment, or rehabilitation of various owned Railroad equipment.
Experience as a locomotive mechanic including electrical is required.
Primary Activities and Responsibilities
• Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety, testing and operations in accordance with FRA standards and requirements.
• Diagnose, repair, rewire and replace malfunctions in components.
• Examine parts for wear and/or defects.
• Interpret test instrument indicators.
• Miscellaneous repairs, activities and responsibilities as assigned by manager.
• A thorough working knowledge of Federal Railroad Administration.
• Responsible for overall locomotive maintenance.
Qualifications
• Previous diesel-electric mechanical repair experience with railroad equipment is preferred.
• Ideal candidate has ten or more years as a locomotive mechanic, and familiarity with a wide range of rail equipment.
• Must be able to properly diagnose and repair problems on your own.
• Weld and use a cutting torch to repair of modify locomotive equipment.
Job Requirements
• Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA). Comply with the guidelines set forth by the FRA.
• Available to work in the geographic area of Western Connecticut and Massachusetts
• Perform emergency repairs to locomotives.
• Replace locomotive and diesel engine components including but not limited to wheels or trucks, traction motors, springs, couplers, draft gear, assembly, gear cases, cylinder heads, air compressors and turbo chargers.
• Knowledge of power and hydraulic tools.
• Work safely to prevent on the job accidents and injuries.
• Wear protective equipment such as hard hat, hearing protection, or safety-toe boots.
• Work hours are 8 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday.
• Technician must supply his/her own basic tools.
• Complete annual training and pass safety rules examinations.
• Must pass all required assessments.
• Must pass a background screening.
• Must pass a post-offer medical examination, including drug and physical capabilities test.
