Barnstable County is seeking full time Bathing Beach Samplers/ Analysts to assist environmental laboratory staff in the collection analysis and results reporting for bathing beach water samples of municipalities during the summer season. High school diploma required; two years of college level coursework in environmental public health or related field preferred. Valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s License required. Ability to swim and to collect beach water samples alone under varying climatic and physical conditions. Knowledge of ability to learn Commonwealth of Massachusetts Beach Regulations and laboratory procedures required for analysis. Applicants must be available to work the entire duration of the summer season from May 27, 2025, through August 29, 2025.
Summary
Professional and technical work assisting Laboratory staff with bacteriological and chemical analysis in
accordance with standard methods for analysis of water and wastewater during summer months on Cape Cod; all other related work, as required.
Essential Functions

Assists the Laboratory Bacteriologist in performing bacteriological analysis of samples from bathing beaches, swimming pools, surface water, shell fishing areas and wastewater; analyses are conducted in accordance with Laboratory Standard Operating Procedures, and state certification requirements and standard methods.
Assists the Laboratory Bacteriologist in preparing media, buffers, and reagents required in analysis; assists in maintaining quality control of analyses, as detailed by the state Department of Environmental Protection and standard methods.
Performs other similar or related duties as required, or as situation dictates.
Education and Experience
High school graduate with at least two years of courses in a Bachelor’s degree program in bacteriology, chemistry or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge Knowledge of laboratory practices and procedures such as maintaining aseptic techniques. Knowledge of computers and laboratory software helpful.
Ability: Ability to operate various laboratory equipment. Ability to interact well with professionals and the general public. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to use a computer.
Skill: Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Required Licensing/Certification: A valid U.S. Driver’s License
