Massachusetts Maritime Academy to Dedicate Marinakis Hall, Wednesday, October 14

Campus’s new STEM building first to connect to new geothermal heat loop

BUZZARDS BAY, MA, ISSUED OCTOBER 13, 2026…Media representatives are invited to join the Massachusetts Maritime Academy community as it dedicates Marinakis Hall, the campus’s new science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) building, on Wednesday, October 14, at 2 p.m.  Massachusetts Maritime Academy is located at 101 Academy Drive, Buzzards Bay.

Marinakis Hall, the Academy’s first net-zero energy-ready building, represents a significant investment in innovation, sustainability, and hands-on STEM education. The state-of-the-art facility features a fabrication lab, makerspace, operations and controls lab, electronics lab, and dedicated biology, physics, and chemistry laboratories. Marinakis Hall is also the first campus building connected to the Academy’s new geothermal heating and cooling loop, completed earlier this year.

The building will be dedicated at 2 p.m. by Rear Admiral Francis X. McDonald, president of Massachusetts Maritime Academy, and Evangelos Marinakis, founder and chairman of Capital Maritime & Trading Corp., a global shipping company specializing in the maritime transportation of various types of cargo.  Mr. Marinakis is one of the leading shipowners in the maritime industry, an international businessman, investor, and philanthropist, and recipient of an honorary degree from Massachusetts Maritime Academy in 2024.

Marinakis Hall was co-commissioned by the Academy and the Massachusetts Division of Capital Asset Management and Maintenance (DCAMM).  BOND Building Construction served as the preconstruction and construction manager for the project, and the building was designed by project architect Ellenzweig and BR+A Consulting Engineers.

Media representatives are invited to campus to attend the dedication of Marinakis Hall.  For more information, please contact either Elizabeth Simmons at esimmons@maritime.edu or 617-852-4029 or Nicole Hales at 617-947-7983 or nhales@prfirst.com.
