Building the National Security Multi-Mission Vessel

Building the NSMV

The National Security Multi-Mission Vessel (NSMV) is a United States Maritime Administration (MARAD) ship designed as training vessels for maritime academies. The five vessels will also be equipped to provide humanitarian assistance and disaster relief. The $630 million project was managed by TOTE Maritime, a U.S.-based shipping company with experience building U.S.-flagged vessels, with the Philly Shipyard constructing the ships. The first ship was delivered to State University of New York Maritime College in 2023, and the second to the Massachusetts Maritime Academy in 2024.

America's State Maritime Academies

America's State Maritime Academies have a rich history, with roots tracing back to the late 19th century. The earliest academies, like the Massachusetts Nautical Training School, were established to train officers for the nation's merchant marine and provide a source of skilled mariners. These academies evolved, becoming more formalized institutions and eventually, playing a crucial role in national defense and economic growth.

State Maritime Academies' primary mission is to educate and train highly qualified US merchant mariners to meet the needs of the nation's maritime industry and national security. They provide a pathway for individuals to become licensed merchant marine officers and commissioned officers in the Armed Forces, ensuring a steady supply of skilled professionals for the country's transportation and defense needs.

State maritime academies, like Massachusetts Maritime Academy (MMA), are known for their strong return on investment (ROI). A study by Georgetown University's Center on Education and the Workforce found that a MMA bachelor's degree saw its value increase significantly from $323,000 to $3,458,000 between 10 and 40 years post-graduation. This highlights the long-term financial benefits of a maritime education.
