Advanced Shiphandling / Manned Models                                                                                                      

Participants will hone their shiphandling skills on topics including: anchoring, docking, undocking, slow speed maneuvering, experiment with movement of the pivot point, advance and transfer, passing in narrow channels, shallow water effect, wind effect, thruster work and much more.

100 Ton License Program                                                                                                  

Any applicant who has successfully completed our Master 100 Tons course who presents our Certificate of Training within one year of the completion of training, will satisfy the examination requirements of 46 CFR 11.201(j)(1) for original issuance, 46 CFR 10.227(e)(1)(iii) for renewal and 46 CFR 10.227(i) for reissuance for any one of the following endorsements and may not be used for application transactions thereafter:

  • Master of less than 100 GRT, Near Coastal, or Great Lakes & Inland, Inland Waters; OR,
  • Master of less than 100 GRT, Near Coastal, Raise in Grade from OUPV Near COastal: OR,
  • Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels (OUPV) or Mate of less than 100 GRT Upon Near Coastal, or Great Lakes& Inland, or Inland Waters.

ECDIS- Electronic Chart Display Information Systems                                                           

Any applicant who successfully completes our USCG Approved ECDIS course will be considered to have successfully demonstrated the competencies of Use of ECDIS to maintain the safety of navigation of Table A-II/1; and maintain the safety of navigation through the use of ECDIS and associated navigation systems to assist command decision making of Table A-II/2 of the STCW Code as amended.

Vessel/ Company/ Facility Security Officer                                                                                                   

This USCG/ DNV approved course, provided by G.W. Connors Inc. provides knowledge to those who may be designated to perform the duties and responsibilities of a Facility Security Officer (FSO), Vessel Security Officer (VSO) or Company Security Officer (CSO), in particular, the duties and responsibilities with respect to the security of a facility or a vessel. This course meets the training requirements as defined by 33CFR 104.210, 104.215 and 105.205 and Parts B13.1, B13.2, and B18.1 of the ISPS Code. 

Those who successfully complete this course will have demonstrated knowledge, understanding, and proficiency in the following competences:

  1. Regularly inspecting the vessel and facility to ensure that security measures are maintained
  2. Ensuring maintenance and supervision of the implementation of the vessel and facility security plan, and any amendments to the vessel and facility security plan
  3. Ensuring the coordination and handling of cargo and vessel stores and bunkers in compliance requirements set forth in 33 CFR
  4. Propose modifications to the Vessel Security Plan to the Company Security Officer
  5. Ensuring that any problems identified during audits or inspections are reported to the Company Security Officer (CSO)
  6. Ensuring security awareness and vigilance on board the vessel and at the facility
  7. Ensuring adequate security training for vessel and facility personnel
  8. Ensuring the reporting and recording of all security incidents
  9. Ensuring that coordinated implementation of the VSP with the CSO and the relevant Facility Security Officer (FSO), when applicable
  10. Ensuring security equipment is properly operated, tested, calibrated, and maintained
  11. Ensure consistency between security requirements and the proper treatment of vessel personnel affected by those requirements
  12. Ensuring TWIC programs are in place and implemented appropriately

Radar Observer Recertification                                                                                                   

Students completing our USCG approved 1 Day Radar Observer Recertification course will satisfy the requirements of 46 CFR 10.480(d) for renewal of any Radar Observer endorsement. Students attending this course must bring the following items with them on the day of the course: 

  • A government issued photo ID such as a driver's license, TWIC or MMC.
  • Proof of current Radar Observer endorsement as found on MMC, License or course completion certificate
  • Plotting tools such as Triangles and Dividers

Students are strongly encouraged to review and practice our sample problems.

Osha Training

OSHA Maritime Outreach Course for Shipyard Employment                                                                                                      

The 10-hour Maritime Outreach Course for Shipyard Employment, provided in cooperation with United Alliance Services Corporation, is intended to provide entry-level safety and health hazard information tailored to shipyard employees involved in ship repairing, shipbuilding, and ship breaking. This entry level course focuses on identification, avoidance, control, and prevention  – not OSHA standards. This course is taught by an OSHA-authorized instructor. Participants who successfully complete the course will receive a card from OSHA verifying their completion of the course.

OSHA 3095 Electrical Standards                                                                                                   

This course provides students with a survey of OSHA’s electrical standards and hazards associated with electrical installations and equipment. Topics include single-phase and three-phase systems; cord-connected, plug-connected, and fixed equipment; grounding; ground fault circuit interrupters; and safety-related work practices. Emphasis is placed on electrical hazard recognition and OSHA policies and procedures. Students receive instruction on safe and correct use of their electrical testing equipment. This course provides information from the OSHA regulations, NFPA 70E, practical discussion, and demonstration.

OSHA 10-Hour Construction Outreach Course                                                                                                    

This 10-hour Construction safety course, provided in partnership with United Alliance Services Corporation, was developed by the U.S. Department of Labor to provide construction workers, supervisors, and other personnel responsible for construction activities with an awareness of construction health and safety concerns in the construction industry. All attendees will become familiar with reading and using the OSHA 29CFR 1926 Construction Standards. Other OSHA related regulations will also be discussed. Students will receive an update and review of standard construction safety and health principles, and information that will prepare them to recognize and control a variety of hazardous conditions.

This 30-hour Construction safety course, provided in partnership with United Alliance Services Corporation, was developed by the U.S. Department of Labor to provide construction workers, supervisors, and other personnel responsible for construction activities with an awareness of construction health and safety concerns in the construction industry. All attendees will become familiar with reading and using the OSHA 29CFR 1926 Construction Standards. Other OSHA related regulations will also be discussed. The course will cover all the Subparts of the Construction Standard.

OSHA Maritime Standards for Marine Terminals (30-Hour)                                                                                                    

This new OSHA 30-hour maritime outreach course specific to marine terminal operations, provided in partnership with United Alliance Services Corporation, builds upon the new OSHA 10-hour Outreach Training Program by adding additional topics relevant to marine terminal operation (and all related equipment). This course includes topics like specialized marine terminal operations “roll on/roll off”, railroad facilities/operations at the marine terminal, safe slinging (using land-based cargo handling gear), proper stacking; and includes advanced PIT/forklift training (including various forklift attachments unique to marine terminals). Also covered in this course are a variety of required and elective outreach topics that include OSHA’s maritime standards specific to marine terminals (29 CFR 1917).

Students who successfully complete this course will receive a 10-Hour OSHA card.

OPA 90 Qualified Individual (QI) Program                                                                                                 

This program provides the most comprehensive training available for the company's designated OPA-90 Qualified Individual. It is also beneficial to others in the maritime industry with management-level responsibility for responding to oil spills. The program consists of four days of lecture and a one day spill management team exercise using our Oil Spill Management Simulation Facility. The program fully meets training requirements set by the USCG and EPA under the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 (OPA-90) and also provides certification as 24-Hour Incident Commander under OSHA regulations. The faculty is comprised of individuals with extensive experience in the fields of marine oil spill management,  law, public relations and environmental science.

Our instructional staff for the QI Program are recognized throughout the industry for their innovative training techniques and their ability to offer superior, customized training.

Basic Firearms Safety                                                                                                 

This course is approved by the National Rifle Association and the Massachusetts State Police for candidates wishing to obtain a License to Carry Firearms.

The goal of the Basic/Home Firearms Safety Course is to teach the basic knowledge and skills and to explain the attitude necessary for the safe handling and storage of firearms in the home.
  
In this course, students will receive the NRA's Home Firearm Safety handbook, pamphlets on safety and terminology, and lessons on the rules of safe gun handling, identifying and unloading various firearms, ammunition, cleaning, and storage. Students will also get hands-on experience with the most common types of handguns, rifles and shotguns. In order to satisfy the additional training requirements particular to the State of Massachusetts, Massachusetts laws pertaining to permit application, firearms storage and transportation rules will also be covered. The class generally runs for six hours, and is usually run over the course of two, consecutive evenings.

Introduction to Welding I                                                                                                 

An exciting two-day class designed for first time welders, or those who wish to reinforce basic skills.  Subjects covered will include: oxy-acetylene welding, brazing and cutting, and shielded metal arc welding (stick).  S.M.A.W. instruction will feature welding of mild steel plate, in a variety of positions, using the E6010 Electrode. Class will also cover gases, pressures, machine set up, visual inspection techniques, and electrode selection.  Emphasis will be upon
 safe welding procedures and practices.  All welding equipment will be supplied.  Students should wear cotton clothing, work boots, and bring a welding or baseball cap.

Introduction to Welding II                                                                                                 

Prerequisite:  Introduction to Welding I, prior experience or completion of Machine Tool Tech (EN-2112).

 A two-day continuation of techniques acquired from the Welding I course.  Students will practice all position welding of mild steel plate using the Low Hydrogen Electrode E7018.  The gas metal arc welding process (MIG) will also be covered with gas and wire selection explained as well as proper machine set up.  In addition, class will include an
introduction to the gas tungsten arc welding process (TIG). Participants will have the opportunity to apply the GTAW process to the joining of light aluminum plate.  All welding equipment will be supplied.  Students should wear cotton clothing, work boots, and bring a
welding or baseball cap.

Structural All-Position Plate Certification Lab                                                                                                 

This course is designed specifically for American Welding Society Structural Welding Certification preparation, for those individuals seeking job opportunities requiring proof of skills upon interview.  Welding skills in “out of position” shielded metal arc using the E7018 Low Hydrogen Welding Electrode will be sharpened.  Certification spec. coupons will be welded together in both vertical and overhead weld positions.  After completion students will cut samples from their plates and perform a “bend test”.  Plates that fall short of this criteria will fail in the form of a visual fracture within the specimen.  Individuals will have many opportunities to improve their skills.  Those exhibiting the ability to weld to AWS D1.1 specifications will receive stamped verification by our Certified Welding Inspector as to their competence.  All welding equipment will be supplied.  Students should wear cotton clothing, work boots, and bring a welding, or baseball cap.  Four days, two weekends.

Explosives and Incendiary Devices/ IRTB                                                                                                 

This one day course is provided by Security Awareness Services of Waquoit, MA and is intended for Vessel, Company and Facility Security Officers as well as anyone else having security responsibilities in the Maritime field.

This is a two part course: Part I (3 hours) deals with both improvised explosives and improvised incendiary devices (Identification and Components).  Part II (4 hours) is the DHS/NDPC (National Disaster Preparedness Consortium) course "Incident Response to Terrorist Bombings"  (IRTB)  The IRTB course awards 0.4 CEUs. The course provides a number of hands on, inert devices designed to give the student a feel for both the reality and gravity of what is being taught. Course completion certificates will be awarded for both parts of the course.

Stationary License                                                                                                 

This 30 hour course is approved by the Massachusetts Department of Public Safety (DPS) and satisfies continuing education requirements for any person holding a Massachusetts DPS license to operate boilers and/or turbines.

All  licenses from 2nd class fireman  through 1st class engineer are required to complete 30 hours of continuing education every five years.

Shellfish Constable                                                                      

We are pleased to announce that the Constable Training Program will again be offered at the
Maritime Academy campus from 22 February through 04 March 2016.

This 80 hour training program will include the basics of shellfish biology, environmental
parameters and shellfish management as well as various topics in law enforcement, CPR
training and will include an exam and certificate of completion for successful enrollees.
The course will be an 80 hour curriculum during the two week period and may be extended in
the event of inclement weather should the campus be closed.

The price for the course is $495.00 per person and is refundable as per our cancellation policy.  This fee includes
all course materials and lunch each day.
