About Us
New Bedford Research & Robotics is a center for innovation in advanced manufacturing, automation, marine robotics and industrial robotics. We bring together digital design, materials research, and robotic fabrication to create new approaches for the AEC and manufacturing industries, as well as supporting technology development in marine tech. Alongside our research, we run educational programs in STEM and workforce development training, giving students and professionals hands-on exposure to robotics, fabrication, and advanced technologies. We also incubate startup organizations, providing them with access to our infrastructure and expertise.
Role Overview
We are seeking a hands-on, detail-oriented Robotics and CNC Tech to support our community in fabrication, prototyping, and robotics integration projects. This role involves operating and maintaining digital and analog equipment, assisting with part fabrication, use of large scale industrial and marine robotic systems, and troubleshooting mechanical and electrical issues. In addition, the Robotics and CNC Tech will occasionally support STEM and workforce development programs by helping prepare labs, demonstrating equipment, and mentoring participants on shop safety and fabrication.
The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced research environment, enjoys problem-solving, and values sharing knowledge with learners and innovators at different skill levels. New Bedford Research & Robotics (NBRR) is a growing organization, and you will have extraordinary access to new knowledge, tools, and innovators. We are excited to be bringing you in!
Key Responsibilities
• Operate and maintain traditional shop tools: CNC mills, lathes, drill presses, and other wood fabrication equipment.
• Fabricate, assemble, and test mechanical components.
• Run and maintain digital fabrication tools including:
o 3D printers (FDM, SLA, Ceramic 3D Printing, or similar)
o Laser cutters/engravers
o Vinyl cutters/plotters
• Prepare digital fabrication files, manage print/cut jobs, and troubleshoot machine issues.
• Work with and support startups at NBRR, while helping to manage their efficient access to tools and equipment
• Read and interpret engineering drawings, CAD models, and technical documentation.
• Assist with wiring, soldering, sensor/actuator integration, and basic electronics assembly.
• Perform routine maintenance and calibration of equipment, ensuring safety and reliability.
• Prepare and process material for ceramic 3D printing and kiln firings.
• Support engineers, researchers, and startup partners with prototyping and custom tooling needs.
• Troubleshoot issues in mechanical or electrical systems and provide practical solutions.
• Prepare Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and instruction manuals for the equipment.
• Maintain a safe, clean, and organized shop environment.
• Contribute to STEM education programs and workforce training by:
o Assisting with lab setup and equipment demonstrations.
o Teaching or mentoring students on shop safety and digital fabrication tools.
o Supporting workshops or public demonstrations of robotics and fabrication.
