Requirements.
1. Must hold at minimum a Merchant Mariners Credential of Mate – Uninspected Fishing Vessel 500 GRT. Must hold endorsements of Radar observer, Marine Fire Fighting, Survival craft, Fishing Vessel Drill instructor, Em medical, Marine Radio Operator Permit.
2. The Mate should be HACCP certified. If not initially, then within the first 6 months of continuous employment.
3. Have at least 5 years of experience working in a Commercial Fisheries. Experience in a Federal Fishery of the North Pacific is preferred.
4. Competence in operations of Pilot House electronics common on larger fishing vessels. As example, Radar, Fathometers, GPS receivers, Auto-Pilot, SSB radio, VHF radio
5. Basic Computer skills, familiarity with Windows Office suite, particularly Excel and Word.
6. Of a reasonable physical fitness with no infirmities preventing the execution of the job description further described.

Job Description. It is understood that any prospective Mate will be allowed at least a one-month training trip to learn all aspects of the job described below:

1. As a Mate on board the catcher processors of Alaskan Leader Fisheries, they will be the second in Command of the vessel. The Mate will share Navigational Watches with the Captain of the vessel. During training the Mate will develop the skills for operation of the vessel during retrieval of the fishing gear (groundline) and deployment of the gear. The Mate will learn the operation of the Mustad Auto-line system.
2. The Mate will be the primary liaison in the command structure between the Pilot House and the vessel crew. The Mate will interface with department foremen as well as all crew in general. He will be expected to integrate and be involved with all aspects of the vessel’s fishing operations. This will be necessary to participate in the management of the crew and development of a disciplined, well-ran ship.
3. The Mate will assist and run safety drills with the crew of the vessel.
4. The Mate will develop the vessel Station Bills and Crew Roster and maintain these.
5. The Mate of the vessel will be the primary individual for the production and keeping of records and logs. These records will include all safety logs, Medical logs, radio logs and garbage logs daily sanitation and HACCP logs
6. The Mate of the vessel will be the primary liaison with the NMFS fisheries observer when on board. The Mate will be responsible for submitting all NMFS required daily reports on e-landings and the keeping of all regulatory required records.
7. The Mate will create internal company reports such as the Daily Production Report, Begin and End of Trip reports, the keeping of inventory records.
8. The Mate, in conjunction with the vessels QC and factory foreman will maintain daily QC work up, such as parasite logs etc.
