Technical Superintendent, Tankers: Florida
Position Overview
The Technical Superintendent is responsible for the safe, reliable, and cost-effective technical management of assigned U.S.-flagged tankers. This role oversees vessel maintenance, compliance, and repair activities to ensure adherence to U.S. Coast Guard (USCG), American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), MARAD, and company standards, while supporting safe and efficient tanker operations in both coastwise and international trades.

Key Responsibilities
Manage the day-to-day technical operation of assigned U.S.-flag tanker vessels, ensuring compliance with ABS, USCG, EPA, Jones Act, and company standards.

Oversee maintenance, repairs, drydockings, and major refits, including planning, budgeting, and supervision of contractors and shipyard work.

Ensure vessels remain in full compliance with regulatory and class requirements including COI, CFR, ISM, SOLAS, MARPOL, and Ballast Water Management regulations.

Coordinate and manage USCG inspections, ABS surveys, and oil major vettings; maintain updated vessel documentation and certifications.

Develop, monitor, and control technical budgets for assigned vessels, ensuring expenditures align with approved financial parameters.

Liaise closely with Masters, Chief Engineers, and union personnel to provide technical guidance and maintain a culture of safety and accountability aboard ship.

Oversee drydock and shipyard projects, including specification preparation, contractor evaluation, project scheduling, and cost control.

Review shipboard reports (e.g., noon reports, maintenance logs, condition reports) and initiate corrective actions as needed.

Support compliance with company Safety Management System (SMS), Environmental Management System, and Vessel Security Plan (VSP) requirements.

Coordinate technical support for cargo systems, propulsion, automation, and auxiliary machinery, ensuring reliability and regulatory compliance.

Participate in incident investigations, root cause analysis, and implementation of corrective actions.

Ensure compliance with RightShip, OCIMF, and TMSA standards when applicable.

Maintain vendor and supplier relationships and ensure high-quality, cost-effective technical support and supply chain management.

Qualifications & Experience
Bachelor’s Degree in Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture, or equivalent technical field.

U.S. Coast Guard Chief Engineer (Unlimited Motor or Steam) license preferred.

Minimum of 5–8 years’ seagoing experience including time as Chief Engineer on tankers.

Minimum of 3 years’ shore-based experience as Technical Superintendent or Port Engineer managing tanker vessels.

Strong working knowledge of U.S. Flag requirements, ABS Rules, and USCG Subchapter D, O, and M requirements.

Familiarity with union labor agreements, crewing structures, and U.S. manning requirements under MARAD and Jones Act operations.

Demonstrated ability to manage drydockings, budgets, and technical projects.

Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.

Proficient in vessel management systems (e.g., NS5, ShipNet, Sertica) and Microsoft Office applications.

U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status required (to meet U.S. Flag and security requirements).

Preferred Skills
Experience with U.S. government / MSC / MARAD chartered vessels.

Familiarity with environmental compliance programs (OPA 90, VGP, ballast water).

Experience managing fuel efficiency, decarbonization, and compliance projects (e.g., EEXI/CII, scrubber systems).

Shipyard experience within the U.S. Gulf Coast or East Coast.

Maritime Academy grad, marine transportation preferred
Time at sea on tankers would be looked upon favorably either as 3/m or 2/m
2+ years of previous experience in a commercial capacity working in the tanker space is ideal
Able to work in a fast paced environment with little supervision
Works well within a team of operators and charterers, as well as external stakeholders
Must be a quick learner who adapts quickly to the day to day challenges of a shipping company
