Overview

The Police Captain assists the Executive Director of Public Safety/Chief of Police in managing personnel and resources within the Police Department. The captain oversees all department operations with a strong focus on enhancing community safety, and fostering positive relationships, and implementing a community-centered approach to law enforcement and public safety. The captain is responsible for planning and managing campus events and acts in the capacity of the chief in their absence.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree
Five or more years of progressive law enforcement experience
Certified law enforcement officer in the state of Massachusetts, or able to obtain certification within 90 days of employment
Demonstrated experience in community-oriented policing
Advanced knowledge of law enforcement
Valid driver's license
Must be able to work anytime, day or night to achieve department objectives in all weather conditions, and serve in an on-call rotation

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree
Strong leadership and interpersonal skills
Ability to communicate with all levels of the organization
Knowledge of Higher Education Regulations and policies related to student safety, Title IX, Clery Act, and other applicable laws
Knowledge of Microsoft Office software applications
Experience managing represented employee groups
Strong administrative, budgeting, and personnel management skills

Working Location

This is an onsite Position in Salem, MA with on-campus, in-person responsibilities, which may require frequent work on evenings and weekends in all weather conditions. Position requires on-call status.
