ASSISTANT ENGINEER POSITION
F/V BOUNTIFUL - POT COD FISHING VESSEL

POSITION OVERVIEW
The F/V Bountiful is seeking a qualified Assistant Engineer to support engine room operations during pot cod fishing trips in the Bering Sea. This position is ideal for someone with marine engineering education or mechanical experience who wants to gain hands-on experience in commercial fishing vessel operations. While a marine engineer's license is not required, candidates must demonstrate the technical knowledge and skills necessary to work safely and effectively in a ship's engine room environment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Engine Room Operations
• Assist Chief Engineer with daily engine room maintenance and operations
• Monitor engine performance, temperatures, pressures, and fluid levels
• Perform routine maintenance on main engines, generators, and auxiliary equipment
• Assist with troubleshooting and repair of mechanical systems
• Maintain engine room logs and records
Mechanical Systems
• Service and maintain hydraulic systems for deck equipment and pot haulers
• Assist with maintenance of refrigeration and freezer systems
• Support electrical system maintenance and repairs
• Maintain pumps, compressors, and other mechanical equipment
• Assist with welding and fabrication projects as needed
Safety and Compliance
• Follow all engine room safety protocols and procedures
• Maintain cleanliness and organization of engine room spaces
• Assist with emergency response procedures
• Ensure compliance with environmental regulations
• Report any safety concerns or equipment issues immediately
General Duties
• Stand engine room watches as assigned
• Assist with fuel transfers and tank management
• Support vessel maintenance during port periods
• Work with deck crew on mechanical issues as needed

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education (Preferred)
• Marine engineering technology degree or certificate
• Mechanical engineering or related technical education
• Trade school certification in diesel mechanics, marine systems, or similar field
• Military engineering experience (Navy, Coast Guard, etc.)
Experience
• Mechanical aptitude and hands-on repair experience
• Experience with diesel engines preferred
• Hydraulic and electrical systems knowledge helpful
• Previous marine or industrial experience a plus
Certifications
• Valid STCW Basic Safety Training certificate (preferred but not required)
• Valid identification documents for employment verification
• Drug and alcohol testing compliance
Skills and Abilities
• Strong mechanical troubleshooting skills
• Ability to read technical manuals and schematics
• Basic welding and fabrication skills preferred but not required
• Physical ability to work in confined spaces
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Good communication skills for reporting to Chief Engineer

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
• Work in hot, noisy engine room environment
• Extended periods at sea (typically 3 to 4 Months trips ranging from 2 to 3 weeks)
• Ability to lift heavy parts and equipment (up to 50+ lbs)
• Work in cramped spaces and awkward positions
• Exposure to oils, chemicals, and mechanical hazards
• Tolerance for vessel motion and sea conditions

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Familiarity with Caterpillar, Cummins, or similar marine diesel engines
• Experience with shipboard electrical systems (12V, 24V, 110V, 220V, 440V)
• Knowledge of hydraulic systems and components
• Basic refrigeration system knowledge
• Previous fishing vessel experience
