Professional Licensure and Certification

requirements for employment in a profession

The academic programs listed on this page are those at Massachusetts Maritime Academy designed to meet the educational requirements for a specific license or certification required for employment in a profession. These are professions for which entry involves some formal postsecondary education and is regulated either by a state agency or a nongovernmental organization. The Academy also offers a number of other optional licensure and certification opportunities that do not necessarily require formal postsecondary education and may not be required to be employed in a profession. Below is information on the Academy's determination as to where and whether the listed programs meet educational prerequisites for professional licensure or certification.

Potential Changes in Requirements

Requirements for professional licensure or certification often vary by state and are subject to change. Prospective and current students should always check with their state's regulatory agency to confirm requirements. This is particularly important for students who relocate to another state after starting their program. For the purposes of these disclosures, student location is determined by the permanent legal address in Self Service. Please note that international students should confirm with the appropriate certifying agency whether successful completion of their program will meet the educational requirements of the country in which they intend to seek employment.

Energy Systems Engineering, BS

Students in the ESE program are required to take the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam during their senior year. This examination is the first step toward professional licensure in the field of engineering. More information about the FE exam and general licensure requirements can be found on the NCEES licensure website as well as from the National Society of Professional Engineers.

Massachusetts Maritime Academy's ESE curriculum is designed to meet state educational requirements to apply for an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification in Massachusetts (note: other states may call this engineer-intern or EI certification). In addition to earning their ESE degree, applicants must also pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam to be awarded EIT certification. EIT certification is often a chosen first step to becoming a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in Massachusetts. Graduates who choose to pursue PE licensure will be required to pay the applicable registration fee and satisfy other requirements, including passing the Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) exam. Four years of acceptable, progressive, and verifiable work experience in the industry is also required. Applicants for registration as a PE must also submit at least five references, three of which must be from Professional Engineers familiar with the work of the applicant, and one of which must be the applicant's current supervisor. At least 50% of an applicant's required work experience must  have  been  completed  in  the  United  States  or  its  territories  or  involve the application of technical codes and professional standards generally used in the United States. A determining factor will be whether work was  performed  under  the  direct  supervision  of  a  professional  engineer  licensed  within  the  United States or one of its territories. Additional information about PE licensure in Massachusetts is available through the Massachusetts Society of Professional Engineers as well as the MA Board of Registration of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors. Specific details about the registration process in MA are available through the Board website.

A determination of whether Massachusetts Maritime Academy's ESE curriculum satisfies educational requirements for EIT/EI certification as a precursor to PE licensure in the following states and US territories has not been made. A list of Engineering-member boards in other states is available on the NCEES website.

National Licensure Outcomes

United States Coast Guard License Examinations are administered by Coast Guard officials to Marine Transportation and Marine Engineering majors during their final semester of study. Students in these majors must pass their respective licensure exams in order to graduate. Recent licensure exam outcomes can be found below:

State Licensure Outcomes

Students who take EN-3214 Municipal Wastewater Treatment have the opportunity to take Massachusetts Wastewater Operator Certification exams. Students who pass can then apply to obtain a certified Massachusetts wastewater treatment plant operator (WWTPO) license. Students primarily take the Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Grade 3 exam. MMA exam outcomes can be found below.

Students in the ESE program are required to take the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam during their senior year. This examination is the first step toward professional licensure in the field of engineering. The initial passage rate for calendar year 2019 was 61% (as compared to 78% among ABET comparators). Additional detail is available in the annual MMA Key Data Elements & Indicators report (see section on Other Measures of Student Achievement and Success).

Certification Outcomes

Firefighting I/II training is offered to MMA students through the Onset Fire Department (previously the Barnstable County Fire and Rescue Training Academy from 2016 to 2018). At the completion of training, students can apply to take exams to earn firefighter I and firefighter II certification. Recent exam outcomes can be found below. Massachusetts fire service certification is administered by the Massachusetts Fire Training Council (MFTC).
