HVAC Maintenance Mechanic II
The Peabody Essex Museum is hiring a highly skilled, full-time HVAC Maintenance Mechanic II. This critical role involves comprehensive installation, preventative, and corrective maintenance and repair of diverse HVAC equipment and mechanical plant systems to ensure high-efficiency operation and reliability. This physically demanding role requires the safe use of standard and diagnostic tools (ladders, man lifts, etc.). Must be able to lift 50 lbs and work extended periods standing, walking, bending, and climbing in various conditions (loud, temperature extremes).
Work Schedule and Availability:
Full-time (40 hours/week), typically 7:00 am - 4:00 pm. Requires scheduled/unscheduled overtime and occasional weekend/off-hour rotational or as-needed on-call/emergency response.
Key Responsibilities and Equipment Focus:
Boiler and Steam Systems: Service, troubleshoot, and maintain residential/commercial oil burners and low-pressure commercial steam boilers (<150 bhp), including steam traps and condensate systems.
Chiller and Cooling Systems: Perform maintenance and complex repairs on centrifugal chillers and monitor/treat associated cooling towers.
Air Handling and Rooftop Units: Service, troubleshoot, and repair large packaged rooftop units (up to and above 10 tons), VAV systems, and air handling equipment.
General Plant Equipment: Maintain and repair various other essential mechanical plant systems.
Qualifications and Experience:
Licensure: Current and valid Massachusetts Refrigeration Technician's License and a valid Massachusetts driver's license are required. Must be able to complete and pass a D.O.T. physical exam to operate museum fleet vehicles.
Highly Preferred Certifications (Desirable): Massachusetts 1st Class Fireman’s License, Pipefitter’s License, and/or NATE Certification.
Experience: Minimum of six (6) years of progressively responsible, hands-on experience in commercial/industrial HVAC/R. Along with direct experience and practical knowledge in BAS operation, monitoring, and basic troubleshooting. Specific familiarity with Schneider Electric’s StruxureWare and/or Johnson Controls Metasys systems.
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent and a certificate/diploma from a recognized technical institution (two-year program in refrigeration and heating technology).
Technical Acumen: Excellent problem-solving/diagnostic skills; proficiency in reading blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals; ability to use standard computer software for documentation.
Attitude: Professional, proactive, and collaborative "can-do" attitude.
The hourly rate for this role is $32.00 to $40.58 commensurate with experience.
