General Responsibilities

General Statement of Duties:   

The academic advisor for veteran and transfer students will provide academic advising and support for students enrolling at MMA with veteran status (including active-duty and reservist members of the armed forces and members of the National Guard) as well as transfer students enrolling at MMA who hold an associate’s degree or equivalent credits. This advisor will provide personalized guidance to ensure these students’ successful integration into the MMA student body and will remain as the primary academic advisor/mentor throughout the entirety of the student’s degree progress and assist with general advising as needed. The academic advisor for veteran and transfer students will run an orientation each semester for these students and host events throughout the semester to create a sense of community among the students. This role includes acting as advisor to the Student Veterans of America and/or the Commuter Club student groups. Additional duties include:

  • Liaise with MMA Admissions Office to ensure a seamless transition to MMA
  • Liaise with MMA Student Financial Services
  • Liaise with the Registrar’s Office on incoming transfer credits
  • Participate in the Department of Higher Education MassTransfer Community of Practice working group.

Qualifications and Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Counseling, or related field,
  • Have experience in academic support services,
  • Exhibit excellent oral and written communications skills and proficient computer skills,
  • Extensive knowledge of Google Suite and the ability to manage and maintain spreadsheets
  • Experience working with military or other non-traditional students in higher education
  • Have a working knowledge of veteran educational benefits

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree
  • Familiarity with academic program software and advising software such as Self Service, DegreeWorks, etc.
  • Working knowledge of the GI Bill requirements, Yellow Ribbon benefits, and similar.
  • Experience preparing and leading workshops for academic success/support
  • Understand the unique mission of the university as a maritime academy.

Salary

$60,000 - $65,000 based on education, qualifications and experience
