General Responsibilities
- Inspect and maintain all lifesaving equipment onboard, including life rafts, lifeboats, hoisting devices, and immersion suits.
- Support maintenance and reporting related to the safety management system.
- Assist the Second Mate in navigation duties, associated with communication and vessel maneuvering.
- Effectively use the shipboard navigation software including Electronic Display, Global Marine Distress Signaling System (GMDSS)
- Supervise, train and coordinate deck operations and assist with the pilotage, navigation and safety of the vessel.
- Participate in all movements of the training ship, such as transits to shipyards, sea trials and sea terms.
- Instruct cadets in Vessel Familiarization.
- All selected candidates must comply with Massachusetts Maritime Academy military customs, uniforms and ranks and participate in random drug screening in accordance with 46 CFR Part 16.
Qualifications and Requirements
Specific minimum Qualifications and Requirements:
- Hold a Bachelor’s Degree in recognized academic discipline.
- Hold valid USCG License as Third Mate Oceans Unlimited with STCW endorsements
- Two (2) years sea experience as Third Mate on ocean going vessels or training vessels of approximate size or larger than the training vessel.
- Exhibit excellent computer, oral and written communication skills.
- Experience with computerized maintenance management systems.
- Understand the unique mission of the university as a maritime academy.
Preferred Qualifications

- Hold valid USCG License – Second Mate Unlimited with STCW endorsements

Salary
$90,000 to $95,000, based on education, qualifications and experience.
