General Responsibilities

General Statement of Duties:

Massachusetts Maritime Academy invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position in Humanities beginning Fall 2026. The position is a 4/4 teaching load that includes teaching core courses (College Writing and/or Writing About Literature) as well as upper-level courses.

Responsibilities:

  • Ability to teach an academic course load of 12 credits per semester (Fall and Spring) within the Humanities Department. These duties will include teaching College Writing and the ability to teach Writing about Literature, depending on department needs. Writing Faculty in the Humanities Department teach a wide range of electives based on faculty expertise and enrollment. The department’s curriculum may be viewed on the Massachusetts Maritime Academy’s website.
  • Massachusetts Maritime Academy is a teaching-focused university, with faculty having many research possibilities and publication pathways towards reaching tenure.
  • The selected candidate will be expected to participate and complement the department’s goals and agendas, including the advancement of General Education throughout the Academy.
  • Faculty are expected to serve as the academic advisors to assigned student advisees and follow all academic procedures and practices of Massachusetts Maritime Academy.
  • All teaching positions at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy require an understanding of the Academy's unique mission and regimental structure.

Qualifications and Requirements

Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. in English or related field by Fall 2026 and cognate research in one or more of the following areas: Digital Rhetorics, Artificial Intelligence in Writing Studies, Professional Communications, Technical and/or Scientific Writing, or any concentration that speaks to the current trends in the discipline. Applicants from interdisciplinary and/or fields adjacent to English are welcome to apply, although training in the teaching of writing is essential.
  • Experience teaching College Writing and the flexibility to teach first-year Writing about Literature.
  • The Humanities Department values principles that foster community, broad representations of experiences and worldviews and will prioritize applications that directly incorporate these values into teaching, research, and service. We seek empathetic teachers, innovative scholars, and collaborative colleagues. We especially encourage candidates with skilled student-centric classroom design to apply.   • Demonstrated potential to fulfill evaluation criteria of teaching, service, and advising at the university level.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • We are particularly seeking to hire a colleague with demonstrated interests in pedagogies that are democratic, engage with various local and global communities and their respective needs in our current society, and understand the lived experiences of varied embodiments in the classroom. Applicants should also demonstrate these commitments in their application materials.
  • Preferred candidates will demonstrate experience developing and facilitating curricular goals and/or assessment processes.
  • Preferred experience with teaching Technical Writing and/or Business Communications electives.
  • Candidates who can synthesize their research with teaching students with various perspectives, particularly those from non-traditional educational backgrounds, under-represented in higher education, and/or are first generation.
  • Experience teaching in both face-to-face and online modalities.
  • Experience in web, digital, and document design, emphasizing user experience and access.
  • A record of effective teaching appropriate to the applicant’s career stage.

Salary

$60,000 - $70,000, based on education, qualifications and experience. Academic rank of the successful candidate determined by licensure, academic background and experience.
