General Responsibilities

The School of Engineering has many instructional laboratories, including a Welding and Machine Shop, Auxiliary Machinery, Refrigeration, Diesel Engines, Steam Boilers, Electrical Machinery, Electronics, Strengths of Materials, Power Systems, and Design, as well as numerous training aids and cutaway machinery used in support of our mission to train marine, facilities, and energy systems engineering students. The Engineering Instructional Specialist will instruct and assist in the Welding and Machine Shop and student project teams during the fabrication of their design prototypes in the Design Lab. The Engineering Instructional Specialist will be responsible for the upkeep of these engineering laboratories and equipment, preparing these labs for student use, and providing other miscellaneous faculty support. Typical duties include ordering parts and consumables, making minor repairs as necessary, maintaining cleanliness and good order in the labs, inventory control, and supervising student assistants. The Engineering Instructional Specialist participates in the annual Sea Term training voyage aboard NSMV Patriot State typically during the months of January and February each year. Shipboard activities include coordination, supervision and instruction of cadets in the use of hand tools to complete simple projects. The Sea Term commitment requires participation in a random drug testing program.

Qualifications and Requirements

Required Qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree in a related field  
  • Two years of relevant work experience.
  • Eligible for a Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC); current MMC preferred.
  • Eligible for Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC); current TWIC preferred.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Two years of welding experience

  • Welder certification
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field.

Salary

Salary: $63,000 to $68,000 based on education, qualifications, and experience.
