Transfer International Student Application Process

Who is a transfer student?

A student who has matriculated into another higher education institution is considered a transfer student. Such a student must meet the transfer requirements below to be eligible for consideration:
  • Applicants must have 12 college credits or above from an accredited higher education institution. These must have been awarded within 6 months of intended date of enrollment.
    • Applicants with 12 or more must have a GPA equivalent to 2.5 or above (on a 4.0 scale)
    • Applicants with 24 or more must have a GPA equivalent to 2.0 or above (on a 4.0 scale)
  • At a minimum, applicants must have completed college level coursework in:
    • Mathematics (specific course determined by placement testing)
    • Chemistry with a Chemistry lab
    • English Composition
  • Additional recommended coursework includes, but not limited to:
    • Western Civilization
    • Calculus I
Be aware
  1. Not all credits may transfer. Transfer credit(s) will be evaluated by the Registrar. The amount of credit(s) awarded will be on a course-by-course basis depending on applicability to the Academy's curriculum.
  2. Students must have earned a 2.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) or above in each individual course for it to transfer.
  3. Non-transferable credits will not be deducted from cumulative college credits completed at previous accredited higher education institution (s).

What are the steps to a successful application process?

Prospective students should apply in a timely manner (see Application Timeline). All application materials listed below should be sent in one large envelope as a self-managed packet (please make sure your full name is on each item).

Application Checklist

Please download the two files below and type your responses, include all supporting documentation.

In addition, please send the following:
  • Application Fee of US $50.00, in the form of check or money order
  • Photocopy of the name page in your passport. It is critical that your name in our student information systems matches your passport exactly.
  • Photocopy of previous US visas
  • Along with official supporting evidence
  • Official academic records with English translations, including transcripts from your secondary and/or post-secondary institutions (if applicable).
  • Evidence of English proficiency (Be aware that testing done in November [for Early Decision] and January [for regular Decision] may not arrive in time for the admission counselor's consideration), we accept: 
    • Prove of attendance in an English instructed school for at least one year
    • IELTS, requirement 6.0
    • TOEFL, institution code 3515. TOEFL Requirement - iBT 75, pBT 530, cBT 200
  • ACT or SAT ( Institution code 3515) - click on the links for more information
  • Two letters of recommendation from individuals who will attest to your potential to succeed at MMA.
  • Personal essay of at least 300 words on the most important reasons for selecting
    Massachusetts Maritime Academy as the college of your choice.
